Newbie seeking bike advice

I've just started a job where the public transport commute is absolute murder, so I'm thinking of getting a bike.

I don't have a balls where to start. I'm in the Dublin area. Budgetwise I wouldn't want to spend more than a grand, but if my needs can be met by something cheaper that'd be good too.

My daily commute will be roughly 20 miles combined across a mixture of good modern roads and raggedy old side roads. Also if the bike was suitable for long-distance touring that'd be a bonus, as it's something I might do if I ever get my fitness levels up...

Advice on what & where would be appreciated.

Something like a Trek 1.2 might suit.

It'll take mudguards with 25mm tyres and (I think) a rear rack so will be fine for light touring.

If by "long distance" touring you mean going to scary foreign places with unpaved roads, you would be better off getting a something more specifically touring-oriented, but it won't be as fast or fun to ride.

    Thanks.

I'd only be using it on nice western European roads ;)

A Trek 1.2 is doable but at the top end of my budget - how would it stack up against a 1.1, or possibly one of the Giant Defy or Rapid bikes?

Does your employer operate the Bike to Work Scheme

If you can take advantage of it you may be able to afford something a bit more expensive, or have some cash left over for accessories

    Yeah, I'm factoring that in.

    I got a 2012 Trek 1.2.

Crashed it into the door of the shop trying to take it out for a test ride :pac: ... but it got steadily better from there. Planned to just cycle it to the train station but ended up cycling it all the way home, despite having 5-a-side in 90 minutes. Too much fun!
