case 4230 problem

Hi all-was running a mower on my case yesterday when the steering stiffened and then seized. With revving and turning the pto on and off it freed up again, but subsequently, when running the baler, i encountered more trouble. This time the pto would cut out briefly, and finally id lose drive with the engine running, as if i depressed the clutch. The tractor seems to operate relatively normally with the torque convertor on, but obviously this is a non runner to continue working. Is this a clutch problem? Fluids all topped up. Where do i start? Any advice appreciated.

Change trans oil and filter is a good place to start if that does not work you will
    know its something more serous

Thanks for the reply-changed the oil earlier this season, had put in a new filter last summer. Tractor doesnt do an awful lot of work-in principle the filter shouldnt be cloggy but of course principle has damnall to do with farm machinery. Ill check the filter but i fear the worst.

I'd change the hydraulic filter too. If water gets into the system anywhere, it can clog up the filter. It happened a lot with tractors during the very cold weather with condensation. You can get away with putting back in the same oil if it's not that old. Let it settle for a few hours in a clean drum first and keep back the few inches at the bottom.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi OP, use a magnet as well when your at the oil, if there is a lot of filings in the oil you'll know sometin ain't right. Are you having trouble with hydraulics as well as the steering?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Cut up the old filter too and see if there's any metal filings trapped in there.

Hi OP. I had same prob few years back with a Case4240. Hate to tell ya but it was the hydraulic pump gone. Hopefully, it just that you may have used the wrong trans oil. Drain it and use the Hytran from Case and also change hydraulic filter. If that doesnt work, reckon it your pump. is the lift etc working.

Thanks to all for the replies. Ive been using morrislubricants liquimatic hy trans oil, which is rated for case. Recently did the oils. Put in a new pump myself two years ago. I was using a wrapper and baler today with the tractor, driving in 'tortoise' mode-no problems operating either of those, which would make me wonder if the pump wasnt the problem. Minute I switch to 'rabbit' mode, drive off a few hundred yards, lose drive to transmission. Switch back again and transmission recovers. Still wondering if it might be the clutch? It was no big job replacing the hyd pump, which i did at the time because I thought the steering was a tad heavier than.a neighbours 4230. No probs since, until recently. Lift has always been inclined to drop on her.

In my case 5150 it was the big filter underneath the tractor that caused similar problems cost around 90 euro
I would recommend anyone working on there own machinery to get a manual
online I have a cat 910 with 12 years and just found 2 more filters this year that I never saw before I always just changed 3 engine hyd and trans but also it had an extra hyd and trans screens that should be cleaned
I was using the wrong type oil also

wrappers tend to be hard on hydraulic pumps anyway. Id change the oil and put in hy-tran and a new filter, as mentioned look out for fillings that might indicate worn brake or some other failing component. It could also be that the steering orbital is on the way out.

Sounds like the ta is goosed, that is unit that controls they powershift part of the transmission, your rabbit and hare lever. The unit itself is in the clutch housing afaik.

Yeah, i suspect this is the problem. I was warned that this unit is known to fail anytime after 5000 hours on this model. I managed a thousand on top of that, literally with my last acre of silage to cut.

Sounds like your High/Low pack is gone. Had 2 go on me in a 4240 a few years ago and ended up getting rid of the pack altogether by getting a modified shaft put in. No problems since but it does get rid of the high low option and leaves it constantly in high. Had 2 packs replaced in 18 months though so was my only option really.

Working a wrapper on this tractor shouldn't really be a problem as it has an oil cooler unit in front of the radiator. Have wrapped 70000 odd bales with one and never touched a pump.
If the pack has gone then the oil will be full of filings, up to you if want to re-use it or not but I would splash out on new oil and a couple of filters just to trap anything that will escape the big clean out that you'll have to do

    Hey Arcadia1,

Just curious about outcome with Case 4230? Did you do the torque kit after? Much work in doing it?
