Imports being questioned by Irish Medical Board

Hi, I really need some quick advice as I'm freaking out at the moment. I (stupidly) ordered some diet pills online, from the US. From what i read i thought that they were legal in Ireland, but I have now received a letter from The Irish Medical Board stating that the pills were prescription only and that I had to tell them within two weeks where I ordered the pills from and why! Am I going to be in trouble for this?? I was genuinely only ordering these pills for my own use to help me lose weight. I have never and never will dapple in illegal substances and fear now that i may be accused of doing so...please help calm my nerves.

    Can I offer you a stiffner? :)

    1. You are unlikely to be in trouble if they were for personal use - the IMB and Customs tend not to get excited over them unless they are in commercial quantities or actually contained banned (as opposed to restricted / prescription) substances. However, if you have any doubts, talk to your solicitor.

    2. Many medicatiosn sold over the internet are not the real thing. You could end up with anything from placeboes to poisons.

    3. If you want to lose weight, talk to your doctor and consider the likes of Weight Watchers.

Thanks Victor, so do you think I should just write back to them with the information they require??? feeling a bit calmer now :)

Definitely write back and give them the information they are looking for. That is all they want. Explain you did not realise there would a problem and you should hear no more.

    From the IMB http://www.imb.ie/images/uploaded/documents/BuyingOnline.pdf
The thing to note is there on pg 7 "has resulted in a number of
    prosecutions and other actions involving
    website operators."
You have nothing to worry about
    Hope it helps

Trish I have received a letter from them for buying online a well. Could you tell me how it turned out for you. Did you have to pay a fine or did you receive the medication in the end.
