Hi can anyone give me some advice/information please?
I want to find a job as a carer/care assistant. I have a diploma in social care from Ballyfermot college (BTEC) and although I am volunteering at the moment with the elderly, that's all the experience I have so far. what I want to know is, do I need to do the Fetac level 5 cert in healthcare in order to become a care assistant(working with the elderly) or is my diploma enough? Really appreciate any feedback
    thanks

My ex was a care assistant and she had no qualification.

This was a few years ago so maybe things have changed since then.

things have changed in a big way , op tell you gf to look up the fetac website she needs to do a level 5 healthcare assistant course, if her social care was level 5 any of the moduals that cross over she does not have to repeat , when i did it last year it was (and still is) a full academic year but it can be done . having the two opens up alot of doors working with intilectual disabilties , i am not sure if she can get a job as a carer with the social care alone but it is worth ringing up some of the nursing home to see because she should be able to get a job with it if she is doing the healthcare assistant course at the same time

I think it depends on the company but your qualification is beyond level 5 so as regards level of education you are fine. As you say that you are volunteering you are showing that it is something that you are genuinely interested in working in the area.

There is currently no requirement to have level 5 but it is coming down the line. So there is still a chance at getting hired. Keep up the good work. Apply for relief positions as there is a better chance at getting on a panel with little experience and from there you can move towards full time work.

    Keep an eye on activelink

Hi thanks a mil for the reply and advice. Do you think it would be worth doing a few modules of the whole healthcare course? I.e, practical care skills?
