Any website recommendation for a newbie to the world of Dslr?

Hi, just recently got my first Dslr, a Canon 1000d. I had a reasonably good point & shoot before but always wanted a Dslr, so after a bit of saving up I have finally gotten one! :D
I am only really playing around with the auto setting at the moment and the shots aren't the worst but I know they could be a lot better. Tried using the 'Landscape' setting yesterday on a walk, the shots looked fine on the little LCD screen but they looked crap on the pc when I got home - hard to describe, kinda whitish and not crisp. I have to say I am finding the manual kind of hard going, tbh.
Just wondered have any of ye come across any website that ye found helpful in the beginning? I'd just love to know more about the settings etc - Atm I'm just not 'getting' it! :(
If I was somewhere and there was a nice scene/object to be shot, I'd love to instantly have a somewhat correct idea of what settings to change etc...
    Any advice appreciated, thanks!

    Karl Taylor has some great YouTube vids, and a free course here;

Haven't tried this yet, might give it a go though.

pix.ie, flickr, and 500px - seek out work that you like in these places and follow the photographers.

tips from the top floor podcast - go back over the old episodes. can be

    oh, and here :D

some place called photographyireland.net too :p many folk hang out on both forums. some get a liking for one or the other.. try them all and see where you feel at home.

photo.net can be good - i like there quite a bit.

i'm not a canon head so i don't know of specific canon fora but i'm sure they're out there.

lots of interesting folk - boardsies and others on twitter and facebook, seek them out - only listen to half the nonsense of what they say.... (well me anyway though I don't say terribly much :) ) - ah, but seriously they're not a bad bunch at all. Usually a bit to be learned by just tuning into whats happening.

go to the national photographic archive, templebar and while there pop across to the gallery of photography.

read a book - try "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson - its much maligned by those that are more advanced, but it is fantastic to get you going albeit it is often argued as to it "technical letter of the law accuracy".

watch out for creative live, which do free online live workshops - these can be good. They normally run over 2 or 3 days.

there's a few places to start for you,

shoot, shoot, and shoot some more.

I know what you mean, I know what work I like & follow, it's just learning the know-how to reproduce similiar that's getting me! :o

    Top Floor podcast

That book sounds good, I will have a look for it on-line. I am familiar with flickr, am a member... And was (probably still am!) on photographyireland... But I only ever used these sites with the old camera... And yes, you're right - shoot, shoot, shoot! Weather willing on Sunday, I am making a day of it, armed with whatever knowledge I pick up between now & then! :D
    Wish me Luck!

Well first of all welcome to the world of dslr and Canon. I'm a canon man myself and think that canon 100d is a lovely entry leave camera. Most important think is to just keep shooting as much as possible and practice will get you there. I would suggest shooting manual as much as possible bracketing your exposure. This mean say your shooting a landscape and your setting is 400 at F8 well then take the same pic at 250 at F 8 and the third at 400 at F11 just for example. You will find that one of them will give you the perfect lighting. I don't know a lot about this camera as in use wise but if you have it set on front button focus this is the first think I would change. Put it to back button focus this may be the cause of the pic not being as sharp as you had hoped. Other then that just get out there and enjoy. One last think you can do some amazing post production work on your pic with photoshop or lightroom both of which do free 30 day trials. They may not be worth the money for you or maybe the are but get the 30 trial of both of them one at a time the will give you two months work. Have fun with them Lightroom three is the bomb. Cs 5 is good but to be honest it's a big program that you don't need CS or 3 is plenty. Other then that there's BC Phototips podcast loads there to listen too. Oh and check out my blog on drop me and email on my site maybe you could tag along with me on a job or 2. Happy shooting newbie.
