    Hi folks, this is not really another "what laptop" question, but I would appreciate some advice.

    I'm a 2nd Yr computer student, and I've had to accept that my dual core pentium, max'd out at 2gb of ram, may need replacing! It's served me well, and I'll keep it as a backup.

    However, as we're getting into photoshop, dreamweaver, VMs, Linux, Visual Studio etc etc, I have been considering this Dell XPS as a suitable replacement, that should last me a few years. I'm not really into games, but I will have to do a small bit of games dev. - mainly just coding and de-bugging practicals.

    What do you think?

    It's priced at €879, which is outside my max budget of €700, but I was wondering - what are Dell like to haggle with?
    I have a 10% off code, lasts until tomorrow, plus I wonder can I also get my 2% student discount on top of that?? Brings it down to €775 - getting there!! If I could persuade them for a bit closer to the €700, I'd be very happy! I'd consider buying it without an OS if that is possible?

    I'm open to other suggestions, you folks seem very up-to-date with prices and specs, so fire away.
    I should mention, I don't live anywhere near a Harvey Normans! There is a PC World here, but I do live close to the border, so which also has a PC World, Curries, Argos etc. Unfortunitly, I do not have a NI postal address, so the Dell Outlet is also out.

    Cheers, mrmac.

    Oh yes it is....:p

    This is just €20 over budget, same CPU, same RAM, better GPU, slightly smaller and slower HDD at 5400rpm but I've used both and there's very little if any difference really.

    Do you really need an i7?? You'd prob..ab..ly need the 6GB RAM alright, (it's to late to go through system requirements now!) there's some good offers on i5s with 4GB RAM, you could get 2GB elsewhere and add it and be under budget with a good spec lappy, it's abit of hassle though for minimal saving.

    There's very few of the new i5s with 6GB RAM at the minute in budget.

    From reading threads on here, some people got good deals by clicking on that floating "Can we help" (or whatever it says) box on the site, few other people got better deals by ringing up.

    PC World = Crap
    Argos = Crap
    Hardly has this one, was €50 cheaper, still good offer. Here it is on saveonlaptops (near same), I don't know if you qualify for Cashback here, read the T&Cs.
    Elara = meh
    Dabs = meh
