Laptop Display Issue

    Hi,

I've a Sony Vaio Laptop and the display has finally gone on it. It hasn't been dropped and there is no physical damage to the screen. The display gradually became worse until one day it was not visible at all. I've attached a pic to illustrate. My question is whether the screen needs to be replaced, is it the graphics card or is it just a faulty cable. I’ve tried to connect the Laptop to a monitor but I get no picture at all on the monitor. Is there anything I can do to test this or what is the best thing to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen a VAIO do something similiar, I would say its a screen problem, although it could be a cable issue, the person actually binned the machine when this happened :eek: even though I said I'd replace the screen so unfortunately I can't say its screen for certain, but that would be my guess. Also make sure you keep holding the function and output key when connecting to an external monitor, make sure Windows has fully booted before trying this, I don't see why the external monitor wouldn't display!

If you wanted to make sure it was just the screen you could plug in an external monitor?

But looks like that screen is fubar'd. If you were in any way comfortable, you could buy a replacement off eBay and install it yourself.

It could be the gpu ive had a few vios like that and they were all gpu problums. You should be able to see the bios start up if you have it wired up to your monitor if the gpu is not dead.
What is the model of your viao

It's a VGN-CR590, I think it was originally purchased in the states. I had thought I could connect it to a monitor and get the display working there but no joy so far. I've been trying to get it to work but it's as if the monitor detects something is connected initially but then remains blank and the light turns amber again.

The gpu in them dont useally give trouble as they dont get that hot compared to other's.

Did you keep pressing the FN key and screen output one? As i said make sure Windows boots before trying, if its not unmuted you should here the startup windows chime so wait a minute or 2 before trying

You obviously tried to take out and reconnect the cable on both sides?

I managed to get another screen to test it on the Laptop and it worked fine. Looks like its the screen thats the problem. Going to order one off ebay and fit it myself. Thanks for the help! :)
