Just noticing lots of people referring to their car as "she". Is this widespread?

To me they are machines, so are a neutral gender.

They are often refereed to she as they carry life inside them, same as ships.
It used to be more common to do so and naming a car means you then build a relationship with it and learn it's quirks and what it's trying to communicate to you.

Interestingly it seems to apply to motorbikes too. You sit on those, as opposed to in them.

    Das Auto. Neutral.
    The Car. No gender assigned.
    La Voiture. Feminine.
    Your choice.

it avoids any unecessarily strange glances.

    scenario 1

*friend arrives over with new car
    "what ya think"
    "very nice, she's gorgeous "

    everythings normal

    scenario 2

*friend arrives over with new car
    "what ya think"
    "very nice, he's gorgeous"

    strange looks exchanged

    Mine is most certainly female.

I know this as it throws a strop once in a while for no apparent reason! :p

Ah not this BS again :(... does it really matter?

People also so say "how's she cuttin?" (outside the pale anyway) you could equally ask "who's she?" "why would she be cuttin?" who are we anyway maaaaan? what is our purpose here? etc

It's just a thing people say

It was more common before, when people were holding on to theyr caes, not trading in after one year for a new reg.

Strangly enough I fell that Mazda mx5 is a girl, but skyline is spoiled, crazy, high on sugar child. Go figure... I still love them bouth same :)

Mondeo is "it" though... :(, but I cant bitch about it as it's reliable as tank. It's just there is no soul in it :(

Are you male? Do you like to be inside your car? It's feminine :D

Real answer: The car is feminine in most languages that use a gendered noun and so it rubs off in others.

I can't imagine patting my steering wheel while saying "C'mon you beauty" if my car was a male :)

My car is a she, but that's because she inherited the name Betsy from her previous owner, my sister in law. Can't change the name after that. I suggested to my girlfriend that she name her car Betsy II (another Corsa) but she wouldn't hear of it.

My next car could be male or female depending on looks, power and reliability.

    And therein lies the weirdness....

Not on your part but my Mother has called EVERY car she has owned "Betsy"

It's quite odd watching a vRS Fabia called "Betsy" tbh...

Mine is called Betty but that's for a very different reason.

My car is a he, but I'm a girl. He is called Rex or Eddie 8.

Similar to guitar's! Female names for a wooden instrument... Mine has a name, my last acoustic had a femine name until I smashed it off the wall and it became a fossil!

Same here - well not the names, I could never get a name that really captured his essence :) I have been known to kiss my car and I am a raging heterosexual so .. he's a fella

Once had a Merc W123, her name has Big Bertha, she would swoop you up in her enormous bosom and waft you to your destination.
Mini's (the old ones) are definitely feminine, since they develop a pronounced whine that gets worse with age.
I always say they don't age like wine, but whine with age.
Other than that they break you heart and your bank account.
    Yep, feminine.
Still call all my cars "it" though.
