No, think that poster was saying it's free in Phoenix. Disgrace charging for hot water.

    Bewley's charged me 50 p. Sods.
As above, Phoenix it was free. But... maybe that was just the lady on the till at the time.

You seen how much electricity a kettle uses? (Still not 50 cent worth, but boiling water is pricey all the same)

Apologies, I mentally skipped over the word cafe's.

Don't places like that normally have a big boiler with constant hot water rather than boiling the kettle every time?

    They do.

So if they are charging everywhere (Maybe they don't) What would be the cheapest place to go?

    They do.

Which requires even more electricity then a Kettle. as the water cools and requires more heat to maintain temperature.

The heating elements in these appliances require rather large amounts of electricity.

It appears to be free in the Canteen.

Never said it was better, just didn't think anywhere like that used a kettle :P

Would they not be boiling that water anyway? As a matter of principal it should be free, just like all water should be free ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭How so Joe

Not necessarily, they have overheads to meet, and if they're giving away the water they've spent money on electricity to heat, then they have to heat more water for the drinks they'll actually charge for.

Oh, and speaking of water being free on principle - in Switzerland last week I asked for a glass of tap water and was told I had to buy bottled water. And was then charged 7 swiss francs for the pleasure! :(

Maybe it's only my opinion but I think that the students should have access to the hot water. What if it will be freezing outside and someone has to stay on the campus for the full day and cannot afford 2 or 3 hot drinks every day?

The amount of electricity is negligible. If that sort of establishment takes a counting pennys type approach to dealing with students then people won't eat there and hence they'll lose out on income. Better to give small things away for free than be a dick and lose customers. I personally hate that Bewleys counter as it's ridiculously expensive, 2 euro for a cookie, **** off thank you very much, tesco sell packets of cookies for less *rubs belly*

    good idea

Not that I'm saying they should charge for hot water - I mean, come on, like. It's water.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭Paczini

Or it should be cheap, like 50c is in my opinion a bit too much for a cup of water.

Awh, well that's crap. I was thinking more of building up a collection of the yellow mugs from Chill. They're pretty sweet.

Where is the best (and cheapest) coffee on campus?
    Preferably Latte or Cappucino.

Probably not the most correct place to ask, but does anywhere know of any coffee place on campus that does Soya hot chocolates?

I've just checked with my kettle and a power metre, bringing a litre of water to the boil uses the same amount of electricity as a desktop computer would in 10 minutes. (Not exact science I know)

I'd hardly call it negligible, but around here it would seem like it.

I still think there should be a kettle and microwave in the common room.
( I know, I know Health and safety and blah, I know)

Or even in the canteen but available for us to use

Not sure I'd think that was such a good idea. I mean there's already what seems to be a vast number of people incapable of using simple things like toilets and taps, soap dispensers. Present them with a microwave or kettle? Things involving plugs and electricity? We only just got the new canteen. Maybe we should wait a year or two before burning it down again.

But the canteen is under supervision, however toilets aren't

I think you have a point... Hmm.
For a microwave at least. No point in a kettle since the canteen gives the hot water for free. I think I'll bring a travel mug and top up my drinks there.

How sad is it that I'm actually excited at the prospect of bringing cup-a-soups to college. :o

I confirm, hot water is free in the canteen ;)

On the subject of microwaves, there's one in Londis that seems to be for public use, though I didn't ask about it so I don't know if they've got any silly rules about it.

It's only free if you buy one of those wee rice/pasta and sauce things they sell there.
