Just thinking about changing from time impact pedals to speedplay - mainly because one of my knees is a bit jippy - has anyone any comments good or bad about the speedplays - any advice greatly appreciated

I know it's in the adverts sub-forum, but there was some discussion on them in this thread

I've had then for over a year now

I'd never turn back to Keo's

I never really had problems with my knees or anything, but was just sick of trying to clip them keo's in after taking off

Thr speedplays are double sided, and are a dream to clip into

    I'd highly recommend them

+1 Except I switched from Time iClics. Speedplays are the biz ! Also with the Coffee Shop Caps, they are the easiest to walk with while off the bike.

Speedplay have two downsides from my experience.
First, the cleats have to be lubricated before every ride (well, they are supposted to be anyway). This is a PITA and results in a messy pedal and it's amazing how this messes up things around it - you legs, the car, etc, etc.
Secondly, the cleats have to changed pretty regurlarly, which is expensive.
Having said all that, I'm sticking with them.

I just give the cleats a shot of Finishline Dry Teflon Lube every other spin, works a treat and no mess at all, I give the pedals a wipe now and then when I think of it.

Quick question about changing the cleats regularly, do you use the coffee shop covers ?

I like Speedplays, but I wouldn't choose them unless I had a reason to (which I do).

I have a set of speedplay the last two year.

I wouldn't change back to look cheap crap. The look cleats are plastic they ware out to quick and break very easy. I have a pair of cleat for a year and a half. I train 5 to 6 days a week so dont mind people saying they ware out to quick it's a load of bull. I had knee problems before I got them and I dont have anything now. They are a bit pricy but you get what ya pay for. Bit of maintenance bit sure all part of the bike need that if you want to keep it in good condition.

I changed to zeros..too because of a bad knee. An expensive change that really made no difference. I guess if the problem had been one of rotation then it would have been sorted.....but clearly it wasent. There is a lot of hype about them and knee pain which I bought into, but maybe go to a bike fitter first and see if your problem really is a rotation one.

Anyway, find them okay. Never lubricated them through a year of 100km per week commuting. can require a bit of force to clip into but no other issues. My commute involves a 200m walk on each side.....use coffee caps for this with no problems.

Thanks for replies - changed my mind and went for look keo blades and will get bike fit soon after a speaking to a few people who swear by getting a bike fit done

I changed to Speedplay Zero's when I decided it was time to replace my 10-yr old Look's. I do have a recurring knee issue but I've not found the Speedplay's to be any better or worse than the Look's as regards that ("knee problem" is a vague term as best though as it covers a multitude of issues - in my case I've come to believe that my knee issue is probably aggravated more by poor cleat or bike position than by the pedals themselves).

I like the Speedplay's but other than some minor (to me) benefits I couldn't really strongly recommend them over Look's especially given the price difference. The minor benefits for me of Speedplay are double-sided entry (useful, but single-sided entry of Look was fine too and I still miss the pedal with my foot with Speedplay sometimes so double-sided is not a magic wand for my occasional doziness), lower stack height, lighter (though once you factor the relatively heavy Speedplay cleats into the calculations I expect the weight difference to be substantially less). I've found the cleats to be a bit of a pain to adjust though - too tight and they are difficult to click in, too loose and the cleat is moving around freely by the end of the ride. I suspect my shoes are part of the problem here as they are small and relatively curved on the base and this makes it trickier to match the cleat well to the curve.

I am currently drawn to Speedplay because they provide these pedal covers which convert the pedal into a flat platform for use by ordinary shoes. I normally use Look and I like the extra surface contact over SPD but I just can't find a way to convert the pedal.

Just to clarify. I don't have any knee problems (phew!). I currently use SPD system, and happily. My only expectation from Speedplay is increased power transfer, due to closer & broader foot-pedal contact. Anything else will be a bonus.
And yes, I know there are systems other than Speedplay which could offer the above. I just really like the word...... Speedplay.... its fast, its fun.....

Well I did it, gone and 'upgraded' to SPD-SL. Yeah, you heard right. I was (am still using until the gear arrives) using the the pre-Lance pedal system before. SPD-R. Got them when I got a road bike years ago but only used the bike on the turbo. Cycling actively for the last two years or so, I tried to resist the change but ultimately had to give in!

I swear thats the last money I'll spend on cycling for a while.
