Guys I have a Dell Vostro 1310 that won't boot, or at least so it seems. When I turn it on I get consistently flashing num lock light and the caps lock and scroll lock lights stay lit. The power and charging lights are lit too and the computer seems to be powered up as the fan is working away grand...just nothing on the screen. Any ideas (before I throw it out the window)?

Plug in an external monitor? Maybe the screen is just gone?

I also tried reseating and swapping around the RAM to no effect.

Dell Vostro 1310 is one of the notebooks that are known to have the Nvidia defect..

List of affected Dell models HERE

Some help HERE (Nvidiadefect forum) and HERE (Boards.ie)

Or you can get it repaired in local repair centre, or try and repair it yourself.

Thanks for the info Allyall. How do I go about repairing it myself? I'm fairly sure there's no separate graphics card and that the graphics are integrated.

O'Prez- you have separated graphic chipset soldered on your mainboard (it's not integrated). If you don't have BGA soldering equipment, new part and bag of experience with BGA soldering (based on your questions I think you don't have), then you can not repair it by yourself.

themonic thanx for the reply. I have a few soldering guns knocking around alright but I doubt they'd do the job in hand. Also, having taken out the motherboard I noticed it was cracked and the price of a replacement is almost the same price as a new budget laptop. I think I'll be using this laptop for parts.
