Galaxy S shutting down

    Hey Folks,
My apologies if this has been previously discussed but has anyone else had problems with their Galaxy randomly shutting down. Mine has started shutting down and the only way to get it to boot is to take the battery out and restart. Searching the net there seems to be loads of forum threads discussing this issue, people have got replacements/repairs and the issue still occured on the replacement. AFAIK no one has come out with a definite fix yet.
Since the problem started happening I updated the firmware to 2.3.4 and did a factory reset, didn't install any apps and the issue still occurred. I've rang Meteor and they are saying to send it in for repairs. I like the phone but I have kind of lost faith in it and I am 3 months in to a 18 month contract and don't want to be stuck with a lemon. Anyways suggestions on what I should do?

    Thanks
    Chris

It's not shutting down but what you're getting is the SoD (Screen of Death) or BSod (Black screen of death)
More often than not the only way to get back up and running is, like you say, to remove & replace battery and reboot.
Sometimes long pressing on the power button (10+ seconds) will bring it back up.

You can flash a custom ROM which should get rid of your issue. Plenty of info both here and on XDA about that.
Or if you're not happy with the phone just send it back. But before you do just be aware that it's not a hardware issue you're experiencing but a software one. I'd be 99% sure about that anyway.
A new phone will probably do the same thing if its running the same firmware.

If you did send it back I wonder would you get a GS2 as a replacement??? Do they still sell SGS? Might be worth a try.

Mine does this a fair bit, I noticed while on holidays it did it much more than often - afaics the phone would not stay on for longer than a few mins.

My theory is that it is something to do with data connectivity. While away I had data roaming off and was not in WiFi range 95% of the time.

That probably doesn't help much, but like the OP I would love to know if there is a fix available.

Yep me too. Happened a couple of times at the weekend. I just take out the battery and put it back in cause nothing else works. Its an Orange UK phone though so hardly like its a bad batch.

It's an issue with Samsungs variant of Android, best thing to do is keep an eye out for an update from Samsung which will hopefully fix the issue.
