    Hi,
My problem is I can only surf the web with the Internet in the halls, Skype and Steam both don't work. Online Games don't work either. How do I make them work?

Skype works after changing some connection settings. Here's the fix. The only ports open seem to be 80 and 8080 so most games and steam will not work unfortunately. I'm fudging around with tunneling atm, it seems to be us poor gamer's best bet here in halls.

Thanks, at least Skype works now.:)

443 is open, if that helps

Is there anyway I can get games to work that require a permanent internet connection, such as Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood?

    Get a VPN.

I don't get it. What's the point in that?

It makes your internet connection no longer massively restricted, so you can do the things a normal person can do, thus solving all your problems.

I don't see the logic behind though. Wouldn't the VPN have the same restrictions as a normal Inet connection?

    1. Look up the definition of spam, the above is not spam.

    2. Its been suggested in at least three threads in this sub, by people WHO GAME IN COLLEGE. We arent suggesting it for ****s and giggles(that would be a terrible troll).

    3. www.google.ie

Talk to DUCSS, they'll show you how to configure it.

    This pointless and offtopic.

Like, I noticed. I know that it obviously works, but all I wanted to know is why, what is the logic behind it?

I know what a VPN is, just don't understand how it is a workaround to play online games on college network.

I will if I can't get it done myself.

    1. Then you don't know what a VPN does.

And you obviously can;t do it yourself, if you could, you would have done it by now. You're asking for help here, yet won't ask ducss?

Internet in Halls?! I think UPC has broadband enabled the cable network in the dartry area for the past year or two, and this likely includes Halls. If someone had a UPC modem lying around and can pick up a signal from the cable TV socket in the kitchen, then UPC broadband will be available in Halls. Unfortunately you won't be able to order it to a halls address but if you get it ordered to a UPC-enabled address (must be in Dublin I think) and then bring the modem into halls, it should work.

Though if UPC make network changes, you could be left with it not working halfway through the year!

Even back in NTL days if someone got a modem and used it in a neighbours house up the road on the same cable, it would work. Or even in a completely different part of Dublin that was broadband-enabled by NTL.

It creates a virtual private network with other computers on the internet. But how are you supposed to play online games with that with people who aren't on your VPN? Sure you would have to know the people with which you play, right? Can someone actually please explain this to me instead of just saying that I'm a stupid idiot.

Well, I thought I'd ask here first.

Well, I thought I'd ask here first.

The clue is in the name Virtual Private network. It's a private network (Duh) on a public line. There's nothing that says the traffic can only be local. You can route your network traffic through a VPN, essentially lifting the restrictions created by a firewall/proxy.

And seeing as you asked here, and someone said "Go to DUCSS", you're not listening to the advice.
What you need is a VPN provider, and a VPN client. This is university, you don't expect to be spoon fed any more than that do you?
    (Hint: google VPN providers)

    EDIT:
I also meant to add in at the end of this post, there's plenty of better things to do in college than play online video games. You can do that at home!
    What about:
Offline video games, with other people? Try Sci-fi soc even?
LANs in halls (Don't need netsoc/DUCSS with their equipment, most games work just fine)

    Non video game related:
Night clubs/Pubs, or if you're underage just parties (even if you don't drink)
    Tea/coffee/lunch with people,
    Societies
    Sports Clubs
    Bowling
    Cycling
    Long walks on the beach
    kongregate.com...

I do, still don't understand though how I am supposed to play online games with people who are not on that VPN. Don't bother explaining though, I've kind of heard enough times now that I'm daft and don't know how to use Google and what not.

Thanks for the info people. I'll try to set it up myself and if I can't then I'll ask DUCCS. Over and Out.

I answered your first question. Nobody said anything about local access on the VPN. All the traffic is routed through the vpn.

I have plenty of video game related suggestions in there, I don't see why you'd choose to live in halls if gaming was your priority, you could have had somewhere 130 quid a month cheaper, and paid for UPC out of the difference.

College is home for some people, remember...

Thysol: in practice the VPN would work as follows*: you connect via the VPN to a server located outside of college which doesn't have the same restrictions (ie none). You can connect to this server because the port you're connecting via isn't blocked, like those required for gaming. Once you're on the network of this external server, you can play whatever games you want, etc. Essentially, the problem is one of "ports required for gaming are blocked -> use different ports". The VPN routes your traffic through open ports.

*disclaimer: I don't know much about networking.

And you pretty much nailed it there!
