A friend just phoned me to say he is looking at a 1998 Daimler V8 that has been off the road since 2006. The auto box is gone/not functioning and he wanted to know:

    a) How much to fix..... I said to budget at least €1,000 and
    b) Is there anyone that could fix it.....I said probably someone up North or in England but have no idea who.

So have I quoted a reasonable figure and does anyone know where to get the box fixed?

A gearbox specialist would be worth a call to quote for a reconditioned one for that model, a grand could be an under estimate unfortunately.

Try Fergus Conway over in Walkinstown if he's still around.

first need to do diagnostics, get somebody hook up with laptop, to see where is problem, maybe only electronic malfunction, because it was off road for some years, mechanically wouldnt be problem, just maybe need change oil in it.

The person selling it has no interest in finding out exactly what is wrong with the gearbox. Just wants rid of the car. I think it was taken off the road because of the faulty gearbox. I'll pass the info on to my friend and let him decide.

An autobox in need of a rebuild such as the Daimler similar to the Jag V8 will be around 2.5K for removal repair and fitting.

An 8 year old Daimler V8 in good condition would have been worth about 20k back in '06. Amazing he just took it off the road!

I haven't gone to look at the car etc and going by my friend he doesn't think he is being told the whole truth so he has decided not to take the car. Even though he was told he could have it for €500!
