What size is the long brass retaining nut holding a mixer tap on a sink

Its all in the title: cannot see thenut as its behind the sink as opposed to at one end.
I can see the threaded bolt but cant see the nut..

The tap fitting is loose so needs to be tightened: is there a washer between the underside of tap and top of sink or is the grip metal to metal pure friction?
    Thanks
