Being better or worse than other people

I think a lot of people view other people as better or worse than themselves. I know the term better or worse than people is obnoxious but I think that's how many people think even if they don't admit it.

For example some people would be embarrased to work in McDonalds so you can deduce that they think they are better than people in McDonalds so they use a person's job as a factor in determining if someone is better or worse than them. Others might use looks, popularity, sexual prowess, humour, intelligence, morality etc. as factors.

Many people on boards clearly view themselves as better than "scumbags" and people who are "immature" judging from the threads I've seen.

From threads I've read I can assume that there are lots of people who use intelligence as a factor in determining if someone is better or worse than them. Many people have made arguments that it's ok to kill animals because they aren't intelligent which makes them a lesser animal than humans. So by that reasoning a they would think a dumb human is lesser human all things equal.

So if you can admit it, what traits do you use to determine if someone is better or worse than you?

Not much if i am honest. I don't get hung up in what other people and only concern myself with my own efforts and output.

If i can honestly tell myself i am doing better work today than i did yesterday then i am happy.

People are not created equal, some people just have better genes than others which makes them more intelligent, stronger, more beautiful, more caring etc.

At the end of the day we are all animals and it all comes down to breeding and genetics. The idea that everyone starts off on a level playing field at birth is laughable.

I tend to like the kind of intelligence which lets people be aware of other people and what they might think or feel.

That doesn't mean they have to try to please everyone else, but at least be able to get a fair idea of where other people are coming from, even if they have a different way of seeing things.
That's why I hate so much modern political "debate," especially the American style which seems to be coming into vogue over here. Two people at opposite ends of the spectrum who'll never see eye to eye, constantly telling each other why they're wrong and always will be.

Purely computational intelligence or fantastic recall is great if you have it, but it wouldn't influence my opinion of someone.

I also look to how people treat others, especially if they're in a position where they might see themselves as better than others. So I hate, for example, wealthy people who treat sales assistants like crap and expect special treatment.

Similarly, I tend to judge people by how they treat animals. Killing animals sustainably for food or useful things like scientific research is fine. But I loathe people who abuse animals or who hunt simply for sport and revel in it: like dressing up and chasing a fox to the brink of exhaustion, or posting photos online of themselves beside the half-blown-apart bodies of fox cubs they've shot.
That kind of carry on just strikes me as pathetic.

I also dislike: arrogance, especially when it's completely uncalled for. And people who try to hide their insecurity by making overt signs of their own confidence to make sure other people can see them.
If you're truly self-confident you don't need to show it off, or make it clear that others are beneath you.

So I don't know if I think I'm better or worse than others, but there are things I judge people on.

I don't worry myself about who is better than me, I don't care what other people have.
Sometimes what we think about people is not always true.

I think people determine their own worth/value by comparing themselves to others.

From what I've seen on Boards, especially in AH, some people seem to have a very high opinion of themselves and are quick to jump on the moral high horse and stamp on other's opinions.

It probably makes them feel better about themselves.

    This ^ tbh.

It depends on what kind of a life you are brought into and how you are brought up. Your general attitude to life, and the goals you set for yourself - If any. By that I mean making more of yourself than popping sprogs purely for the sake of raking in all the social welfare benefits you can get your mitts on and council housing.

Do I see myself as better than people who set themselves purposefully up for a life on social welfare? then yes, yes I do.

I dont generally care if someone is better or worse than me other than to use it to motivate myself.

Like the King of Moo said though I will judge others by their actions rather than their situation in life and like or dislike them based on that.

I don't look down on someone working in a profession that doesn't require as much skill as mine. I'm way too busy doing more important things that their little brain wouldn't understand.

I think that people going around judging people on where they work or how they dress what car they drive are idiots. I have never worked in a fast food franchise (nor never would ) but I know people who do and let me tell you they are the most decent of people who just happen to for one reason or the other end up in these dead end jobs. I don’t judge anyone and to me everyone starts on the same level of intelligence, and they can either prove they are intelligent or prove that they are thick, either way I still treat them the same, except maybe when at social gatherings and I tend more than likely to be seen conversing with people of higher intellect.

Bit harsh there to be honest, I know your sentiments are correct but it's a little unfair to speak of working in a fast food franchise as 'dead end'. Good luck to the people who do work there, they are earning a living to support themselves and possibly others. Plus I'm sure hard work in those jobs can lead to promotion etc.

As far as I can see the vast majority of people spent there lives with their own tribe and this tends to make them wary of the other tribes.

For me it comes down to respect.
If you've got respect for yourself and respect for others, you're grand.
Anything less than that, I probably won't like you.
