SU Card - only 1% Discount? [edit: card error corrected]

    I was just looking at the SU Card points as I haven't seen any real return on it yet. On the website it says;

Wall Café, Smokey's Café, The College Bar
4 points for every €1 spent

    The SU Shop
2 points for every €1 spent

Looking at my points it's showing only 1 Point for every €1 spent in any of those locations, not the rates shown above.

As you must have a minimum of 250 points to turn your points into cash credit of €2.50, this means spending €250 and you get just 1% off.

Does the SU Card really only represent a discount of 1%??

I know it's good for the 11th coffee or dinner free though, but it seems hardly worth getting out for anything else...?

The SU got back to me - it's a glitch and should be fixed soon... ;)

Isn't Tesco clubcard the same? A cent out of every Euro.

Pathetic really. One could point out that in the words of Dire Straits it's "money for nothing", but the benefits seem negligible considering the SU would have wasted time and money on producing and distributing these cards.

edit: a 2-4% return is also pretty dire.

I see if you "top-up" your card in September you get 10% extra free. That might be the best way to use it: 9.1% off and no 250 point spend before getting the benefit.

I recommend buying a 2 Liter Thermos Flask and bring your coffee in it. At least then you won't have to buy directly from them. I did that because of the lack of value for money in these NUIG stops. The queues in the downstairs canteen were enough to drive anyone crazy - I got the bus home during my breaks and cooked from home. Aldi offer great value for groceries (unlike Dunnes). NUIG is a very expensive place for food.

I got another reply from the manager of the college bar, the system default of 1point=€1 had reset on the system. They've fixed it and all points due will come back on accounts in the coming days.

They're topping up my card with €30 for highlighting it... nice!! Thanks SU. :D

I wonder if this ''mistake'' was deliberate? I would question how the system could reset and then take on a life of its own to give a 1% discount.

Thank You for bringing this up.

When setup the special points values were set as a "promotion" on the system, the promo was given a 2year duration... which timed out in the last week or two.
