No Mahatma Gandhi in Irish Politics...ever!

There is a lot of talk about Martin McGuinness and whether he would make a suitable President for our Republic.
The fact is that that there have been plenty of gunmen involved in the formation and running of our state.
From Pearse and Collins to Dev and Lemass.
Throw in Haughey if you like.

The truth is we have never had a Mahatma Gandhi style politician in this land because it has never worked here.
We learnt this when Daniel O'Connell and Parnell's attempts came to nothing against a powerful Empire.

Pearse, Collins and the like of McGuinness were products of their times.
They were also successful in their endeavours and in advancing their goals to some degree.

This is good politics (whatever the tree hugging liberals will say).

Anyone who thinks that McGuinness is unsuitable because of his past should realise that without the "freedom fighter/terrorist" we would have no Irish state or civil rights in the 6 counties.

It takes more than the 'times' a man is born into to form what sort of a person he becomes. Personal integrity, honour and values will be the same in any era.

Oh, methinks Pearse and Collins were a lot more successful than McGuinness.

The NI civil rights movement was probably partly inspired by the US black civil rights movement. Unfortunately, there was no Martin Luther King in NI.
