    just installed ubuntu 11.04, if anyone else is using it, is there a way to change the apps stored in the popout menu on the left hand side?

    e.g currently there is firefox, home folder, libra calc, writer and impress. it also stores open programs which i like, but there are other ones id like to put in there.

    any ideas?

    also, is there a way to have more than 9 desktops in the workspace area?

    cheers.

    run the programme you wish to put there, while running right click on the programme's icon and press sth along the lines of 'keep in launcher'. Right click also to get rid of them.
    Don't know as re workspaces...

    Unity seems to be "just" a compiz plugin, so install the Compiz Settings Manager

    sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager

    Then open it and select General and within that General Options.
    Now select the tab Display Size. The horizontal & vertical Size values here will expand the number of workspaces - changing it from the default 2x2 to 3x3 will give you 9 desktops, for example.

    As an aside;
    I mentioned the unity plugin... well if you select the Desktop category on the left you'll see the unity plugin, and there are some tweaks here that are handy too... like changing the icon size in the unity bar or when the icons are "backlite".
