    Hi,

Trying to get a stream for the Ireland game this weekend in America I think I got a virus. I am having serious issues getting rid of it. I was thinking I could try and do a system recovery from a partition. I made disks when I first got the computer but they are at home in Ireland and I won't be back there till Christmas. I should be able to do it with out them shouldn't I? Also I use backup and restore function to backup to an external harddrivd regularly enough. I think I did this in the last few weeks. If I do the System recovery can I then use the backup to restore it to a couple of weeks ago or will this not work for some reason?

    All help appreciated.

Have a look at the Virus & Malware Removal forum, first of all.

If they can't help, then you're looking at a wipe and reinstall. TBH if a virus is sufficiently persistent that you can't clean it, starting from scratch is the safest option and I'd only opt for a rollback if:
    a) I knew (ie had tested and confirmed) that the backup was clean and that the virus in question would not reinfect the system (ie it's not a rootkit), or
    b) I had no access to reinstallation media & licence documentation.

If you can't get it recovered quickly you could use it to run ubuntu of a usb and that way at least you'll have internet access.
