Community Welfare Officer/Rent Allowance Question

    Hi

I recently moved into a different area and I am on rent allowance. I had to go to a different Community Welfare Officer in order to get rent allowance for my new flat. Anyhow, he has asked for a 6 month bank statement. I don't mind this, and have nothing to hide, but I am wondering is this normal procedure? I think that a detailed 6 month bank statement showing every transaction (Lazer etc) is kind of invasive of my privacy. Has anyone else experienced this?

Also he has asked for loads of other information.
I am a student and have been on rent allowance for 4 years and I have moved a lot and never encountered this before. Is this normal?

    Thanks

    Bob

    Yes. it's completely normal.
They calculate your contribution based on your means which includes what you have (or don't have ) in the bank.

The CWO has to establish your level of "need". Obviously if you have alot of money in the bank, for instance, you would have no "need" of rent allowance. The only way he/she can establish your "need" is to actually see your bank/PO/credit union statements, P60s, payslips etc.
He/she certainly isnt interested in every fiddly lazer transaction, but just looking at the general comings and goings of monies from your accounts.
Im afraid when you apply for assistance you have to set aside a little bit of pride, its best not to take things personally, the CWO has a job to do and your co-operation is essential to move your application forward.

Absolutely the norm to ask for these documents. Following is a list of what is usually required and you will note from the end of the list that the CWO usually visits you to confirm your circumstances.

You also need to bring the following documents

Identity documents for you and your dependents, such as, full Birth Certificates, passports, driving license, work permit, immigration (GNIB) card, etc.
Documents to show your income and financial situation, such as, pay slips, P45, P35, P60, bank statements, etc.
Documents to prove where you live, such as electricity, gas or phone bills, etc.
Documents relating to your tenancy, such as your rent book, lease or tenancy agreement.
The CWO usually visits you to confirm your circumstances.
