black deposit behind a radiator

Hi, would appreciate any advice with the following.

About a year ago I put reflective insulation on the wall behind all radiators.

Today I noticed when I lifted the insulation behind one radiator, positioned on an external wall, there was black on the wall even though the wall was painted lavender.

The radiator is underneath a window which I had staining along the vertical walls immediate to the single glaze window. I had to use mould spray to get rid of insulation sheet. The house was built in 1990.

I would really appreciate advice and also whether filling the cavity would eliminate this problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The airflow behind a radiator can draw dust. The heat ionises the dust and it sticks to things.

However, if you only put the insulation in certain places, you may be creating a point on the perimiter where there is a sudden drop in temperature and condensation is forming.

The think is to insulate everything and avoid 'cold bridge'. However, cold bridges are usually experienced as isolated spots - your entire house is the cold bridge, except for the insulated bit.

With ****ty windowsills ( http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=70618341) you are faced (propably) with water ingress. Since this water can't evaporate as fast as it enters the walls will become saturated. Ad heat from the radiator and you have a microbiological circus.

Nothing that a cavity fill will solve. Keep the water out.

Staining is nornal enough and its caused by convection around the radiator. If the cavities aren`t insulated then it`s well worth getting it done.
