    Hi all,
The wife is thinking of changing her corolla verso and was looking at a yaris sol. She wants a small car with a good package of equipment. But 18k for this small car is quiet steep.

Any suggestions? ( has to be new and yaris size )

    Thanks

Hyundai I20. AC is standard I think, so is 5 year warranty.
Kia (new) Rio when it gets here, a looker, nice spec and 7 year warranty.
New Corsa SE - huge spec! (heated steering wheel), might be same price though!
Fabia 1.2TSi - nice bit of umph.
Aston Martin Cygnet - right badge, wrong price - we all know it's a Toyota really.

Polo as well of course, probably much better than the Yaris too.

Would you get a new Polo for 18k these days?

Why not? You can get a golf for 19k last time I looked.

You would get a skoda fabia which is pretty similar with plenty of spare change if your budget is 18k.

    Polo's start from ~15k http://www.volkswagen.ie/ie/en/models/polo/brochures_and_prices.html

    Fabia starts around 12.5k http://www.skoda.ie/IRL/Documents/PricingAndSpecs/July%202011/RRP_Fabia_07July2011.pdf

Both very nice cars. Polo would hold its value better due to it's badge, Im sure.

I'd go for the Polo too if I were you, bigger boot, better built and much better value for money. Plus both the 1.2 TDI and 1.6TDI versions would fall into the€104 tax band, diesel economy without the big tax. I know you said your wife was looking for a smaller car but why not have a small car that can also be practical when it needs to be?

A 1.2 (70bhp) Polo Highline which is similarly equipped to a Yaris Sol, retails slightly less than €18k ex delivery and metalic paint. Only comes with a miserable 2 year warranty though.

Hyundai i20 1.2 Deluxe comes in at €15k ex delivery & metalic paint, and comes with a 5 year warranty.

Ford Fiesta 1.25 (60bhp) Titanium is €17,300 ex delivery & metalic paint, again only has a 2 year warranty.

If she doesn't need 5 doors then you also have the likes of the Fiat 500 and Ford Ka. They are basically the same car, Fiat 500 1.2 Sport comes in at €14500 while the Ford Ka 1.2 Edge comes in at €12500. You also have the Fiat Panda 1.2 Dynamic at €11,300, all new Fiats come with a 4 year warranty.

Also, why buy brand new? It's a family car. I'm sure it's going to get a little scuffed.

Lowish milage polo for 8k http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Polo/POLO--CO/201137204406964/advert?channel=CARS

Lower milage, cheaper Fabia for 7250 with same engine. 156 tax. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Skoda/Fabia/Ambiente/201137204427809/advert?channel=CARS&featuredListingClickThru=true

    Save a few shillings maybe?

if your wife drives short distances, then better get petrol car, as diesel may have trouble. where reading about polos 1.6 tdi... lots trouble for people who driving short distances, so better get petrol one. My wife have 1.6 diesel polo(75 hp), road tax 104 a year, she drives every day 50 miles 5 days a week, found it very economical(well not as promised by VW, but still ok), comfortable. No hassle at all.

Renault Clio. Unless those Polo, Yaris etc. list prices being quoted are subject to big discounts, the Clio should be much cheaper.
    http://www.renault.ie/media/transversal/price-list-cars/att00305924/renault_pc_pricelist_01092011.pdf

On renault.ie frontpage they are advertising a Clio model for 10,990 including delivery, metallic, aircon, alloys. It would not be well equipped apart from that though and is due for replacement next year. Still, a massive difference between that and 18k for a Yaris.

The new Citroen C3 starts at €14,600 ex works.

The clio has metallic, aircon and alloys for something like 11k straight.
That's value. Also its probably the best bet from a depreciation point of view.

Sorry??? Best bet from a depreciation point of view?? It's one of the worst depreciating cars in its class! It's only saving grace is it's low purchase price.
It's also a pretty old design (ignoring facelift). Just because something is cheap to purchase does not make it inexpensive!

in same mind ourselves with wifes verso and thinking maybe todownscale with somewhat same budget...

looked at Jazz 1.4 EX and Fiesta Titanium
    ix20 is also a possibility

How much do you reckon an 18k yaris will be worth in 4 years?

Earlier this year, I priced small cars for a customer looking for the cheapest leasing option over 4 years.

The Clio won hands down against the Fiesta/Yaris/Micra/Corsa/Polo/Fabia, for whole life costs over 4 years.

They won't be worth what a Polo will be worth come sale time, but the initial purchase price difference is very hard to overcome.

I did take the low purchase price into account but don't forget, there's room for negotiation on ALL the Cleo's rivals but not a lot (if any) on the Cleo's price. And how did you price the numerous trips back to the Renault dealer to have problems and niggly faults fixed "under warranty"? I'm sure the Cleo comes with an extended warranty but by God you'll use it and warranties don't cover your time lost travelling to/from dealer or the needless stress.
If OP is coming from Toyota ownership they'll find Renault ownership a bit of an eyeopener.

The yaris sol 1.0 5 door is €18200 ex works so that's €485 for delivery and €500 for metallic
That's €19150 less a realistic newly launched Toyota discount of €1150 which is €18000

An 06 clio is worth 4500 and a yaris is worth 6500

So over 5 years a clio should cost 6500, a yaris of that spec €11500 but pulling back for it being new model with spec maybe €9000

Please don't shoot me lads but I would suggest the OP look at a Punto.

( takes cover awaiting the furious reaction )

New Renault's are rock solid and exceptional value.

You'd want to ravers to spend 18k on a fúckin' Yaris.

Surprisingly, I did take in to account the huge discounts I also receive on the Clio's rivals. Still left the Clio much cheaper, so your point is?

To deal with the second point, my Wife's had 2 Clio's and the Mother In Law had one that was then passed to my Sister in Law. Only issue between the 3 cars was when the timing belt snapped on the MIL/SIL's car, after 10 years which is well past when it should be changed. Still only cost €500 to fix after that.

Any more "pub expertise" you'd like to trott out?
