Is ticket touting legal?

It's more a civil matter. The tickets are generally invalid if sold to a third party as per the terms and conditions of the purchase. However there may also be a case for the criminal offence of making a gain or causing a loss by deception as the tout is selling something they know will be invalid.

What about someone buying something they know will be invalid?

I suppose the question would be how do they know it's invalid?

I suspect that that particular ad. is a scam because it quotes the exact row and seat numbers of the tickets being offered for sale. If they actually had those tickets they would need to be complete idiots to state the details which is tantamount to inviting the promoter to invalidate the tickets.

Anyone selling genuine tickets blanks out the barcode and seat details when they post photos of the tickets on donedeal/ebay etc.

Surely if they are buying the ticket from someone hanging around a street corner that would gave the game away?

Incidentally, I see nothing wrong with ticket touts.

Not really. That would require them to have a knowledge of the terms and conditions agreed to by the tout when he bought the ticket.
