What would be a good small solder?

    Hello all,
I'm looking for a small solder to de-solder and resolder broken flash drives, to rescue the data from them. I've tried a few programs, but either they can't see the drive, or they can't even access the drive. Knoppix only sees empty disk, if it even sees the disk!

For size, it'd be something that could solder something along the size of the chip in: http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/1033464.htm

It be something I'd like to try my hand at, as I'm the "go to tech person" for friends and family (they give me cash or drink if I fix their problems :D), and have been getting some USB drives lately that are dead to the world.

    /edit
Also if anyone knows what sort of a small hot-air gun I'd need to de-solder the chip form the board?

    /edit2
I just had a strange deja-vu of having asked this question many years ago.

Use a bit of flux when desoldering, will make it a lot easier.

This is what I'm using. Not too bad for that price.

You may also consider this. Doesn't have 'hot air' function but is lot cheaper. You can always but separate hot air rework station in the future.

I would also like to advise you to think twice before spending money for BGA rework station as it's often not worth the time and money to do this repairs if you're going to have one or two repairs a month. Remember that you WILL brick few PCBs before you'll learn to rework BGA properly.
