Well in Aldi UK it's 120 pounds which is E170, they have a funky euro converter to add on E60. Rip-off Ireland

No big deal, Argos has a very good similiar machine for €200 from Liteon.

My sister got one and I've been palying with it, so far I'm very impressed.

So far I've only found 1 problem:

It only has a 1, 2, 4 and 6 hour record mode, no 3 hour, which would be a good compromise between 2 and 4.
    - This is supposedly fixable with a hacked firmware (which also removes Macrovision protection and makes it Multiregion with no remote code needed :)

I take it the reason these are getting cheaper is because they won't record onto the new dual layer standard?

You could be right but I think it will only really drop once they release the DL into the shops with a big roll out, then ya will get the bargains but I for one almost want the newest and best at the cheapest price which is a fine balance.

On the subject of DVD Player/Recorders does anyone have or know of even a player not even a recorded that can play multi-codecs eg avi, xvid, divx, vcd etc ones that are readily available?

I havent heard much about them or even seen any, so if not I was thinking of hooking my laptop up to my TV thrugh the Super Video out port and into a scart connector to the PC, but when i do so it comes out on Black and White. I have an inckiling that it is due to the fact that I work for an american company and the build for my PC is american style software the whole PAL NTSC thing anyone had any experience of this? (Hooking there Laptop to there TV)

But penultimately I want to get a versatile player that plays multi codecs.

The Pioneer DVD/DIVX DV-470S player is supposed to be the best Divx and DVD player according to all the magazines, however it is more expensive at €125:

The big problem with dual layer is that the media for it is still very expensive (anout €5 per disc) and it isn't very good quality.

While I expect that there will be Dual Layer DVD recorders out by christmas 2005, they won't become practical and high quality until 2006.

I'm holding out for the new breed of DVD recorder that record the surround sound broadcast on SKY+

Even DD2 would be good enough for me.

Do any exist yet. Heard somthing about them a few months back but nothing since.

    I have this one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=42451&TabID=1&source=2&doy=30m11

Very reliable - hasn't refused to play a single downloaded file yet. Highly recommended. Can also have its software upgraded via a downloadable ISO.

Go to Display Properties --> Settings --> Advanced and select TV in there. It should be automatically able to detect PAL/NTSC in there, but if not you should find a setting to change it. Before I got my Divx player I connected laptops to the TV all the time without any problems, so you should *definitely* be able to do it, once you have a video out socket.
