Long title but short post. In a nutshell, do folk use this option on modern thermostats or is it true that it wears the zone valve actuators and boiler prematurely through the on-off cycling involved?

I've not heard of it wearing the zone valve or boiler. I know on the Danfoss TP7000 there are a maximum of 6 on off times per hour for a gas boiler. The stat constantly monitors it's surroundings so it might not even switch that amount of times.

I've read those posts and to be honest I think everyone has an opinoin whether good or bad. For me I would recomend them simply from end user reports, my customers seem to be happy with them where I've fitted them. I also fitted a TP5000 into my new sun room because I made a seperate zone to the rest. With the advent of the colder evenings it's nice and comfy and it's not bringing the boiler on that much, i'm just waiting for the snow to come for the real test.
