Nissan Terrano no go!

Got a neighbours 95 Terrano 2.7 stuck in my yard with what seems like a fuel problem. He came in complaining it wouldn't rev over 2000rpm and died quickly back to 1500max with a bit of a lumpy idle.

First thoughts were dirty filter or dieselbug problem, he claims to put decent stuff in most of the time

Filter not that old and clean as a whistle but reluctant to prime, took a lot of hand pumping. Then noticed nothing came out with ignition on so thought pump dead, turns out it doesn't have one, injector pump pulls it up. In finding this out I got to check the tank pickup (where I thought I'd find a pump :o) which was fine, tank pretty clean.

Thanks to all this fiddling it won't rev at all, idles roughly and cuts out.

    Any thoughts?

Get a gallon can of diesel and an inline filter and eliminate any supply problems, ideally clear tube and you can see it prime itself.
TBH if its anything to do with the pump, it would be scrapper time.

Stuck some clear pipe on the line from the tank in to the filter, pump is pulling feck all through.

Terrano for spares or repair anyone? :D

Have you connected before or after the fuel filter?

Those little plungers can leak air into the fuel system.

    injector rail?

Ours failed about 4 years ago with the same problems...

Before, I'll try after as well, you've reminded me the similar unit on my father's Trafic leaked like a sieve!

Spent most of today nursing a mighty hangover but tomorrow am going to see if I can find the banjo connection on to the injector pump, supposed to be a filter in there as well but it's a bitch to get at.

If that doesn't sort it he can take it to the local diesel specialist, not getting that involved on a vehicle that isn't mine.

Yea there might be the tell-tale leakage of diesel about the rail... It is sorta hard to see as its hiding under the intercooler.

That age of a yoke will just have a simple rotary inj pump.

    I'm tired :o

Its not a common rail engine, I probably should have made that more clear. But the injectors do leak on them :D

I downloaded a manual but it's for post 02 that has a scary amount of electrickery (and I think a Td5 Land Rover is simple). I'll lave a look around the injectors for leaks but as I said, it's getting beyond doing a neighbour a favour.

Besides, it might infect my Land Rovers and one of them throw a sickie in sympathy!

They are very simple. Once it is getting diesel it should go.

They're a bulletproof engine otherwise. The london taxi used to use them too

+1 on the hand primer nissans are known for it

You are right on that score, bypassed it and it ran for a bit but then died again. Located the banjo union on the injector pump, under the PAS pump of course

Hooked the little filter out damaging it in the process, it was a bit mucky anyway so lobbed it over the hedge. Reconnected banjo and fired it up and it runs fine. Need to sort a replacement filter head now, plenty on fleabay or fit a basic new one without heaters.

Get a proper one, better plan. will cost more of course but it was meant to have the one it originally got. Fuel system is not something i'd like the idea of downgading
