    Hi

Does anyone know the story with visa's for Thailand.

I am flying into Bangkok and then I'll be island hopping - Samui / Phangan / Tao etc.

Do I need any sort of visa (I was told I didn't)

Total length of trip is 24 days.

    Thanks

no need for a visa as long as you don't stay longer than 90 days.

For a 24 day visit, you'll just need a visa-on-arrival,which you can get at the airport in Bangkok. If you were crossing any borders to neighbouring countries there might be an issue but it sounds like that isn't the case.So you've nothing to sort out in terms of a visa!

I don't know about the visa but i'm thinking about going to thailand myself how much would the flight's cost & what sort of spending money would you need for going for that long?

i've heard from people it's cheap but never about how much you'd need with you etc.

I'm going with Air France. When I booked it was €650. Air China were slightly cheaper but they're the Ryanair of long haul :P

Accommodation is ok! Between €10 - €30 per night. I guess it depends what you do and see!

if you book a good bit in advance you'd get it cheaper wouldn't you?

are there any times of the year that going over there are more expensive?

You will get a 30 day visa on arrival at airport
You only get a 15 day visa arrival through land borders such as crossing from Malaysia
You can get a 60 day free visa through a thai embassy outside of thailand which isn't needed in your case

For every day you overstay your visa, you incur a 500baht fine, thats about 12euro a day

No you won't as these are not visas, just permission to stay for up to the times you've mentioned.

You'll have to pay for the actual visa, it's €40 i think if applying here.

thats pretty expensive, I got mine for free a few months ago in Malaysia, the single entry was free, not sure how much the multiple entry visa was

i'm travelling there soon too. staying for 7 weeks = 49 days. i have heard mixed reports about what visa is necessary. i will be flying to bangkok then heading to malaysia after a week, then back to bangkok after a week, then off to laos and cambodia, then back to bangkok.

do anyone know (from experience) if 2 x 30 visas will do the job?

I have only ever been in Thailand for less than 30 days which is what Irish passport holders get if arriving by Air, if arriving by land we only get 15 days.

For you this is how you will be doing it right?

Day 1 arrive in Bangkok by Air, get 30 days

    Day 7 Depart for Malaysia

Day 14 arrive back to Bangkok by Air get another 30 days.

It really then depends on how long you will spend in Laos or Cambodia and how long you plan to spend in Thailand again before travelling back home to Ireland. If you structure it right it can all be done Visa free other wise you will need to get a visa.

thanks stinicker. yeah thats basically my plan. in total will be entering thailand 3 times. i see that triple entry tourist visa is €120!

thought i might be able to save a few bob by doing it another way but it could lead to some complications.

In answer to my own question for others who may enquire:

no need for multiple entry visa.
arrived in thailand and got a free 30 day tourist visa.
left thailand before 30 days were up. once you leave the country that visa is finished.
re-entered and got another 30/15 day tourist visa.
    i entered thailand 3 times on this trip (3 visas - 1 x 30 day, 2 x 15 day), all free, no problem.
