im looking to get a gps or just buy an iphone for my bike, but before i do, just wanna make sure that there is a charging solution out there, cos somethimes i head off for 100 miles for example, and need the iphone or gps to continue operating as a navi device until i get home!

is there any solutions out there?

i already have a dynamo integrated into my front hub if there is anything i could do with that?

The battery on the garmins will last 12 hours or so.

The Garmin Edge 500 is good for about 15-16 hours (or even a bit more) of use on a full charge. Dunno about the iPhone, or any smartfone, but anecdotaly, the GPDS function seems to put a large draw on the battery.

Using GPS continually on the iPhone will drain the battery very quickly. I've found you'll only get around 4 hours or so.

You can get a charger that works off your dynamo hub,the name escapes me now but im sure you can google it or have a look on peterwhitecycles.com he mentions them, not sure if if sells them though.

You can get small solar panel chargers too, my friend got one for going touring in Europe but if you have a dynamo hub you may as well make the most of it.:)

I think you'd be mad to buy an iPhone and e-werk for the bike if you don't have either already, when a Garmin 705/800 would do the job (although smartphone navigation is better than the bike Garmins in my experience).

    However....

Invent something with the dyno hub!

My iPhone (3G) only lasts about 1 hour at best, 40-45 minutes of continuous use usually puts it to rest.

    Just carry a spare battery.

I've got an Android and if I stick it into Airplane mode, GPS recording still works. If you need it for navigation though you might need an app that has maps built in. Don't know offhand of any, I'm afraid.

I've used Android navigation with data turned off. I calculated the route in range of a wifi hotspot . I suspect it downloads the route vectors/waypoints before you set off.

edit: powermonkey type chargers are worth considering.

As an aside, there are several 3rd party apps that you can just download the data to your phone to use as a navigation tool. No data required. Most are free or cost 2 euroish. The navigation seems to need an online tool for the one I have, but it should be doable without that as well.

    Holy thread revival batman.

Does anyone have the Zzing, or anything else that could be used in conjunction with a hub dynamo for charging devices. Would something like this be suitable for charging an android tablet?

    cheers!

I presume Replacement 3500mAh Battery in an Android phone would solve peoples issues of battery drain using GPS.

    Cheep too:

sorry - i should have been more clear. A friend of mine is travelling to the states to cycle the trans american highway, and I said Id see if I could find information for him on charging stuff. He will be using an edge 700, a phone, and an android tablet. Sometimes he will be sleeping in tents and will need to charge them. Sometimes he will have access to plugged in power
