Hi guys, need to set up a business website for my new start up.

Just need some info because I really don't know allot about websites and webdesign.

    Here are my quick questions:

    1) How do I buy a domain name. Need .com and .ie

    2) When I buy one do I own it for life. Or must I renew and rebuy every year.

    3) Who would I need to contact to build my website. I have my company logo (but it would need updating) and literature for a website.

    4) What would the cost be roughly. Lets say a simple 10 page website. Would need a feature where customers can send me their details.

    5) Can I design my own website, as I said I don't know allot about it but I'm a quick learner. Are there any free or cheap software packages I would need to do so.

    Thanks

    Thomas.

    1) How do I buy a domain name. Need .com and .ie

    Try http://www.ieinternet.com/

    2) When I buy one do I own it for life. Or must I renew and rebuy every year.

It depends - normally the .com ones are free but the .ie needs an annual sub

    3) Who would I need to contact to build my website. I have my company logo (but it would need updating) and literature for a website.

    Try http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055234599

How long is a piece of string - you're looking for some dynamic functionality where customers can provide details, you'll require a database to store customer details etc. Also depends on the graphics you have or need.

    5) Can I design my own website, as I said I don't know allot about it but I'm a quick learner. Are there any free or cheap software packages I would need to do so.

You can - look at Wordpress or Drupal

.com domain names are free? Do you mean free to renew after your initial subscription has expired?

.com domains are not free and like all others, require an annual charge.

trying to solve similar problem right now.

I'm leaning towards Google Apps (Free). They have basic version where you pay only 10 USD/year for a domain name have some web space and 5 email addresses, and some advanced options for more money.

Blacknite Google and An Post are running a promotion at the moment:

from what I get it's domain name, web site and email boxes for a year for free, then you'll have an option signing up with blacknite. From what I get you can only use their own web site building tool, which could be the best if you're new to it.

    +1 on gettingbusinessonline.ie

Fantastic, forward-thinking collaboration between Blacknight, an Post, and google. My business partner and I have just set up our business site using that, it's completely free for a year, easy to use and has a choice of all the major domain names (.ie, .com, .eu, .biz) to choose from.

So to answer some earlier posts, yes, this is one occasion where .com domains (and indeed .ie) are free.

Getting Irish Business online: there is also Enterprise Board. Personal opinion: great initiative. However, you have to use their Site Builder... no Wordpress, Joomla, Google sites etc. More info

Google Sites or Apps: if you buy a domain, then you can build your website easily, have up to 10 email addresses for free (ie info @ yourbusiness), and other good stuff. More info

Otherwise, Wordpress and Joomla, more professional, but they are a bit more difficult to learn from scratch. More info

On the 10th of Nov I'm going to run a Workshop "Build your own Website for free" @ Dublin Innovation, if interested PM me.

    Hope it helps!
