    Hi,

Used Turtle Wax Platinum Extra Gloss earlier in summer after reading test in Auto Express http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/207997/car_polish.html

Brilliant polish, rain seems to keep the car clean! And very little work to apply.

However, smearing on front screen terrible. Tried everything, various screen wash additives, vinegar, fairy liquid, newspaper, etc! But still as bad.

    Any suggestions..?

Bottle of coke. ( Coca Cola) not the cheap stuff.
Next time it rains or even a drizzle pour some across the top of the screen allowing it to flow down, Turn on your wipers and let them do a few wipes, repeat process.
Wash car and enjoy your nice squeaky screen.

If you want you can get a bottle of RainX and treat your screen for the winter. Great stuff on the motorway with no wipers on :D

I had a lot of visibility issues in my car.

    What I did:

I poured a bottle of anti bacterial mouth wash into the window washer resevoir to kill any nasties in there and to flush the system. I then sprayed it all out and filled again with a pint glass of water and flushed out any remaining residue with that. This pretty much had the windscreen sorted.

I then got a cloth and a can of coke (the real stuff) and pour some on the windscreen and on a cloth and washed the windows with it. I also cleaned the wiper blades with it.

Finally I turned on the wipers and pour some coke on again and looked for any areas I had missed and repeated the process.

After this I then cleaned the car with a hose to remove any remaining coke as it is corrosive and sticky

A poster here called Hiace reckoned that if you strained the spudz on your windscreen as in urinate on it that it does the trick.

I cant say if it works or not but I can recall a frosty night years ago where my GF at the time had to do this to clear the frost of the windscreen. I cant remember if the visibility improved after though..:pac:

OT, but most of the products on test seem to be waxes and not polishes.

Thanks for all the help and advice to use Coca Cola.

Finally got around to cleaning front screen today and it has worked a treat.
Great to know for the future.

For future reference - use Isopropyl Alcohol. It's what optician use to clean glasses, it'll dissolve most oils and greases eventually. I use this for my telescope eyepieces, and my eyeglasses. Most chemists should have a bottle of it for sale. Isopropyl alcohol is considered safe to use, just keep it away from sparks and naked flames.

Pull the wipers away from the screen. Pour the IPA on a cloth and rub the windscreen thoroughly, keeping the cloth wet with IPA. Clear up any water droplets left with a lint-free cloth, and you should be good to go.

+1 on the recommendation for RainX or similar treatment. Makes a huge difference to visibility in rain, with water beading instantly instead of wetting the screen.

As an FYI it's the phosphoric acid in CocaCola that works as the cleaning agent. I would suggest using diet Coke instead of full-sugar coke, as the syrupy remains of drying Coke is a real magnet for abrasive dust...

I have a similar problem, squeaking wiper blades driving me nuts.

I changed the blades and cleaned the screen and changed the windscreen additive and they still squeak! They only stop squeaking momentarily when I use the windscreen washer, but once that clears and they're just wiping regular rain water the squeaking starts again.

    I'll try that alcohol idea.

Sorry, but I'm trying to picture this:

Your GF crawled up on a frosty bonnet, dropped the cax and shook her lettuce all over your windscreen to clear it!?!

Classy bird - no wonder she's an Ex! :p
