Beetle Identification?

    A friend of mine just found this beauty in her car. Any ideas? I'm assuming beetle, the red and black looks hard, but with wings too? Never seen anything like it!

    Had a look here and and the closest I could find is either Lebia cruxminor or Panagaeus cruxmajor. Neither of them look exactly like your pic, but close.

    It's a Sexton Beetle, aka burying beetle.

    Could one one of a number of species. I have a pdf somewhere to identify to species level, but its not at hand :o

    Would they be common in Ireland? Never seen anything like it in my life!

    I don't know about the specific species, but yes the genus is common. They're attracted by moth traps (UV light) and there can be as many as 10 in the trap.
