Streaming football on the College Network

So I moved into campus this week, and I didn't expect there to be much difficult with streaming on the college network. I expected it to be a bit awkward getting programs like Sopcast etc to work, but I thought that just browser-web-page-live-streams would be fine. This is apparently not the case.

I find this kind of strange. What's the difference between opening up facebook, youtube or some forum and playing a video, and going onto a webpage with a live stream. Is there some sort of blacklist on the network? Anyone have any info on how to get around it?

I reckon I'll go mad if I have to spend the whole year without the ability to stream football.

Generally things aren't restricted. Check with ISS what their policies are. http://isservices.tcd.ie/

The IT network is meant to only be used for work / study purposes. I imagine a few thousand people streaming the RWC would be a bit of a waste of resources.

Why on earth would anyone want to stream rugby? :D

Point taken though. (Also, I did your survey, to say thanks).

Anyone else with any info on how to get around this? Sites like firstrowsports just don't seem to work. Again, I find this kind of surprising as they just stream live video, I didn't think this would be a problem.

You could always use a VPN.

How would I go about doing this?

You sign up to a service and run a program basically.

All college traffic goes through a proxy, some streams will work, others wont, it depends on the streaming system in hand. Youtube for example is a flash system, which works. RTE which is RMTPE(or w/e its called) appears not to.

Ah ok, cheers. Tbh, I did google it, I was more so wondering if there was any TCD-specific info I should know.

Ah, ok. That sheds a bit of light. A degree of trial-and-error will be involved then.
