    Hi

We got married in Feb and we are finally getting around to filling out forms, Ive seen that we will be calculated as joint assessment automatically.
My only issue is that I dont know if there is a particular form to fill out or can I just fire off an email to the revenue with our details on it

    Thanks

There are three types of assessment and revenue should always give you the benefit of whichever is most beneficial to you .:
    • Joint assessment
    • separate assessment
    • single assessment
There is a form which can be found on the revenue website and it is called : assessable spouse election form

Its not necessary to fill this in , but have a look anyway .

As we are nearly into October , it is unlikely that you will notice much difference in your tax credits , and most likely that the tax office would place both of you on a ' week 1 '' basis from now until year end .

In January 2012 , when ye both receive your P60's , go ahead and get a full review and P21 issue for 2011 .

You are assessed seperately in year of marriage, with an option to 'look back' - meaning if you would of paid less tax under joint assessment from the date of marriage onwards you can reclaim the difference (from the date of marriage so a portion).

Joint assessment is automatic thereafter (so long as you inform the tax office) unless you elect otherwise.
