First buck for the season

got up at 4.45 this morning and poked the head out the window to see a good day on the way There was no wind and no rain so spirits were high..Stuck on the kettle and made a strong brew of coffee and loaded the Jeep with the tools for the job and off I went to my local haunt...

I arrived just before sunrise and just had that feeling that it was going to be one of those mornings that only a stalker knows about...

I parked the jeep up and loaded the rifle, adjusted the sticks and strapped on the bins and off I went to a clearing that has just recently been felled in the wood...Found myself a nice little spot to park my butt for a scan of the area and spotted a nice doe who had spotted me a gave a small bark and took off on a little 50 yrd run then stopped to look back then went on with her business grazing away..(lovely to watch)

While I was watching the doe I spotted two white palmations of a very nice buck make his way through the edge of the wood and into the newly felled clearing.... At that moment the old heart rate just tripled and I had him in the cross hairs and ranged at 280 yds.. With a gentle sqeeze I let fly with the 7mm08 and made good clean contact with his lower neck and just high in front of the shoulder...The lad dropped in his tracks...

After cleaning him out and tying the rope to his fromt legs for the drag I discouvered that old age has set in on me and I could just bearely budge the cow of a thing....So off I went trying to find an old track that I could get the trusty Jeep Cherokee through and thanks me to god I found one...Otherwise I still be there dragging that beast...

All in all it was a cracking morning...One of those ones that will stick in the back of the head for a good while....

    Nice StagBuck!
    Look good mounted ;)

A Fallow that old would be a monster, much heavier than a Sika.
I've only ever shot a few that size and never again, prefer prickets as the are a handier drag.

Good to see everyone is getting something after a slowish start to the season.
I spent 25 minutes looking at 5 last night, 3 Does and two fawns.
Roll on Nov and Open season for all!

I really need a decent camera for low light with Zooooooom.

He's a beauty dwighet. Very dark. Nice shot at 280 as well. He'll make a nice Euro mount for the wall, interesting shape to the antlers from the front, like a great bowl.

Coolio, I'm going for another evening stalk this evening in Dublin mountains

    Let her be Lucky.

I must try and FIND my camera, the new phone although 8MP has no zoom.

your guy would make a nice mount, just remember to leave enough cape if you are thinking of it.
With enough cape you can get a nice mount.

I am supposed to be going for a stalk down in Tipp shortly too, must give you a hollar if/when I am down there.

    Just back from hanging him....
What a struggle that was on my own...
It weighed in at 150 pounds clean...
No wonder when I was trying to drag it all I was doing was burning rubber..Must of been close to 12 stone with its insides intact..

Thats enough RAVING now...Time for a shower and a pint or 8..

I missed your last post before I wrote the other.
Euro mount is better than no mount I suppose.

Yeah, the Mildots are handy, I have 2MOA lines At 200 more or less the same diff.
14x @ 280 is a fair shot, the practising must be paying dividends.
    Well done Skip ;)

Nice shooting man, the 7mm08 seems well up to task:cool:. Thats a fine animal and 280 is a nice distance. Enjoying all the reports from you lads on the deer and goat hunting, and its great its on this isle and not having to read it in sporting rifle. Really makes me think bout gettin deer licence:D
