how is this still around after 10 years...

the royal rumble beer belly was the best thing about it, anything after that has been poor. Fans chanting what after every statement only leafans still chands to promos being delivered at the exact same pace etc

its a pretty damning indication of the last 10 years that fans are still chanting what...

Tbh, I prefer it to dead crowds which is a bigger problem at the moment.

I also think it exposes a weakness in WWE's generic promo style where wrestlers are constantly stop starting.

    "I want....to face you....John Cena....in a WWE Championship match....at the next pay per view....in a tables....ladders....and chairs....match!"

Its panto, WWE is at the end of the day a glorified panto, so WHAT if the fans say what? its part of the interaction between fans and performers.

    He's behind you......
    What

I dont think it shows anything negative to the last 10 years, more it shows how great Austin was/is.

Like people were still ".....'Hulkamania run wild on you?!" for a long time after the 80s.

I hate it with a passion. Unless R-Truth ridicules the people saying it.

The chant ruins so many promos. It is similar to mindless boring chants 2 minutes into a match.

yeah generally i dont mind it but if the crowd layed off it till say someone was tanking then maybe we could get more quality promos as you can actually see some getting flusterd by the crowd reaction and not knowing how to proceed at times

WWE wrestlers should be taught how to promo that doesnt give the crowd the chance to chant it.

As TSC said, the generic.. timed.. promo.. is just so old and in need of renewal. The thought that the promos are still delivered near the same way boggles my mind.

Yeah exactly. Sometimes it works well and builds heat (like with R-Truth for example). But a lot of the time they just start chanting it for no reason at all.

I guess as some have said the slow, pausing style of promos leaves them open to the chants.

That's done to give the crowd a chance to react to what's being said which is one of the fundamentals of promos.

When it is done well that is the case. But a poor generic promo is as the lads describe above.

But that's usually because whoever is cutting the promo is terrible which will still be the case regardless of how many pauses they take.

Not to every couple of bloody sylables though.

Exactly, take a very known speech such as the classic "I have a dream speech". It was clearly built up to provoke an emotion and it had clear places were it was expecting public interaction (i.e. cheering etc.). This is utterly lacking in most promotions done today and delivered with only one emotion of rage (and that is usually lacking as well).

The WHAT chant seems to be a sign that wresters are getting over with the fans.

As has been said, the problem with this theory is that the pauses aren't always for cheers or boos. There's a difference, say, when Punk or Cena or HHH take that breath after saying someone's name, saying something special or saying something that deserves a response.

    Compare that...with the likes...of Alberto....or R Truth...or a string of other wrestlers....who think that by leaving gaps....it makes them sound intense....or serious....when in fact....all they do....are drag out their promos....for....way....too....long....

Maybe. But only in the situation that its a Face/heel face off promo and the its been shouted inbetween the heels pauses.

my problem with it is the fact that as soon as it starts, the promo is doomed to fall into that slow rhythm. Every time a guy stops to take a breath its "what"
