+1. Had an issue there with the pro version (paid for) and not being able to clean the ctfmon virus. But Microsoft Security Essentials worked a breeze.

Get rid of avg and install ccleaner and mse. You'll be grand.

Wow, you asked for advise, then didn't heed what was said and went ahead and bought it.

You must have more money than cop-on, 40 quid a year is a lot of money for pointless software. You're paying for software that in 20 mins you would have thought yourself how to do for free. Laziness of the highest order.

i was asking about pc tune up and if it was worth paying the extra money for it. peopls said its not and that there is better free anti virus out there which i said i would look into when avg expires. as i said i have had no problems with it so i dont see any reason to change now..

Wow, sorry I missed that, so on top of the 50 quid you paid for AVG internet security, you're now paying an extra 40 for this tune-up software

IMO Avg is no longer a good antivirus, it's now one of those bloated slow ones I advise people to avoid, I've been discouraging my friends/customers from using it for about 18 months now. It was good 2 years ago, now it's crap. They also make it nearly impossible to find the free version on their site. The link scanner crashes browsers, causes lots of problems and hogs bandwidth. Nobody wants or needs toolbars on their browser, toolbars are all nasty, they just slow down your browser and report everything you do. Avg has also now started pestering for money, offering the full version and pointless other softwares to vulnerable people with too much money.

ill make this clear I DID NOT BUY PC TUNE UP. i was asking for advice on it. avg antivirus came with the laptop when i got it. i used it for a year with no problems. when it expired last febuary i renewed as it seemed to be doing the job. i never had any problems with virus etc so far.

they gave me a free trial of pc tune up 2 or 3 months back and after running it i noticed an improvement in performance, but as it was only a trial i could only run it once. the reason for this thread was to find out if people thought it was worth the money but from the responces i wont be buying it as there seems to be different ones that do the same for free..

i also run spybot search and destroy and eusing registry cleaner.. maybe these are no good either.. i will be the first to admit i know sweet f all about computers and i will listen to any well voiced opinion when it comes to them!

Spybot is fine, (although Malwarebytes is a better scanner), Spybot offers immunisation which is great. I would'nt bother with the tea-timer realtime protection, I've seen it cause issues and slow pc's, disable it from your startup. You can install Malwarebytes with Spybot, update and run the full scan every few weeks, just decline the full time trial everytime you update.
I don't recommend registry cleaners at all, they can cause issues, the light one in Ccleaner is as far as I'd go and even that isn't essential for a well working pc.
I also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as antivirus, it offers better protection than Avg, doesn't nag and is completely free with no offers of paid versions or other software.

With these few FREE softwares you can keep your pc in great shape and fully secure and keep your money in your pocket

The later version of Spybot are very poor, if you want to run an anti-malware scan you best bets would be MalwareBytes Free or Super Antispyware Free. For an anti virus program I would reccomend Microsoft Security Essentials which is free and activating the Windows firewall.
As mentioned above CCleaner does a good job removing temporary files and it also has a registry scanner, which can be used to remove broken or orphan keys. Another useful tool made by the CCleaner team is Defraggler, a disk defragmenting tool which can speed up your pc also!

    cheers guys
i had malwearbytes but it never found anything on a monthly scan where as spybot might find 1 or two things. also lately its very slow to connect to the internet. it could be loading from between 30 - 60 seconds before my homepage will show after i hit the browser tab the first time after starting it up where as when it was new it was almost instant. would a defragmenting tool help solve this? are they safe to use? i would be afraid it would delete something important and i have no way of backing it up??

Defragmenting will in theory speed up the computer, and no it won't delete any files, all it does is group stuff closer together on the hard drive, making seek times less long

What homepage? What browser? What version? Have you tried another browser?

How much ram has your pc (right click computer--> properties), this can happen when your pc has just about enough memory

Remove all toolbars, uninstall them and use Ccleaner (tools-->startup tab) to turn off programs starting at startup that are not essential (most of them)

If you uninstall AVG your computer will be faster straight away. There are also free tune up programs, winutilities is one. As was suggested use cCleaner, defragment and limit your startup programs. Run filehippo to see what needs updating.

homepage is google. browser is internet explorer 9 i think? ya i tried firefox and google chrome. both are the same, slow to start the first time but grand once the do.

    ram = 3.00gb (2.75gb usable)

there are no toolbars on the browser but there might be some installed. i did uninstall a few a month or so back (ask & yahoo and some others)

i use revo uninstaller to limit the programs that come on on startup

What kind of broadband connection have you got? Is your router set to dial on demand instead of always connected?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

its not really broadband. its 3 mobile broadband. i have a wifi router do not one of the plug in dongles.

would that be ppp connection? if so thats set to auto not on demand

Therein lies your problem, 3 mobile is not an always on connection no matter what settings are on your router.

Most of us here don't even class it as broadband, hence its got its own midband forum on here, a form of fast dial up

Precisely, I know of people who have switched from fixed line to mobile broadband :eek: .

That's the trouble with mobile, it can't be depended on and it slows as the word gets out as more people start to use it. If you get good speeds, don't tell your neighbour, cos you'll then share those speeds. The speeds quoted are shared by everyone.

Mobile was never designed to be a fixed broadband substitute, it's designed for on the move use, for light browsing and email checking. And now with everyone getting smartphones it will only get worse
