Has any experienced this in the new canteen...?

Ive been there a good few times over the week now but today (friday) i went to get food at the usual time of 12 o clock and it was lyonese burger or something like that.

Asked for mash with it and the waiter gives two measly scoops and one of the burger things ( which look like pork chops) while lacing it with vegetables (frozen veg) and covering it in gravy. I then asked if he could put some baked beanas on it to make it look more presentable but he said "sorry i cant because you have to order the baked potatoe to get the beans" Facepalm!.

Now I like my food and if im expected to pay a fiver for something then surely I should get a good feeding from it, What i was left with however was a tiny plate with 2 scoops of mash potatoes, one porkchop/burger (covered in gravy) thing and loads of frozen peas. I just decided to leave the food on the table beside where you get the knives and forks because I was so angry at this.

Now during the week I was able to get good feedings especially when they had the bacon and cabbage on. Did this happen because it was friday or I just came along on a bad day.

Whats everybody elses experiences with this place so far? :pac:

Haha good question and no I did not because I thought i'd be charged more.

Should I even have to ask for more, why are they even rationing it they way they are.

Because cutting corners and screwing people out of their money is generally associated with such businesses. Complain to the SU, total joke.

Ive used the canteen in colleges such as WIT and never was I left short-changed in relation to the ammount of food they give you. that was a disgrace today and I chose not to pay for it so hopefully other people will do that and they might cop on .

Or you could ask for more next time instead of wasting food

Like most things, it'll depend on the person serving you. Some people in O'briens will give you the smallest portions on a wrap or a sandwich, others will give you so much you're wondering if it'll all fit in the bag.

Same thing happened me with the Lyonnaise Mystery Meat burger yokes (definitely didn't seem like Beef in my opinion).

Ended up going to the canteen 2 times last week for some reason. Once was a damn good bacon and cabbage with nice portions of everything, another was the pork chops which, for a fiver, I had absolutely no complaints with.

The Lyonnaise thing though, should really be taken off the menu, or drastically reduced in price. I did ask if that was the biggest piece of meat they had, and to be fair, the lad serving me was a pure gent and said that he couldn't give me an extra slice, but he did heap on the veg and chips, and poured more sauce over it at my request.

The service, impeccable in my experience. The food, not so much

Even with the fancy building and name, its still a canteen.
The food is edible, more then can be said for the old canteen on most days.

I learned two things today. Unlike Bewley's, they don't charge for a mug of hot water (needed a lemsip). And the coffee they sell at 1.35 is plenty good. I like the place and will be studying there often.

Had a different experience myself - went in with friends for breakfast and to try the place out, looked like a self-serve setup (at least the one in front of me was helping herself) and there was feck all in the trays, even less for veggies, ended up going to Chill!

I thought the brekkie was good! Hot breakfast for €3.15, not complaining...

Went in there for the first time today for lunch, got noms for cheaps enjoyed free water and popadoms,
chatted to some sound randomer and went to SSS(Software Sound Synthesis) class reasonably happy.
I think I shall go there more often now!

doesnt suprise me. typical gombeenism shown its head in maynooth again. the place is full of it. getting off the train in maynooth is like going back in time to the 1850s

Don't be surprised of there will always be burgers on Fridays :) It's always like that with Compass Group.
If you get small portion ask for more, If you won't they will give you as small portion as possible to sell more :) From my experience I know that in most cases if someone asks for more, gets more, but it also depends on a person that serves you.

I'd agree with that. Its cheap and cheerful. If your willing to pay for it, head over to Pugin Hall to get better quality food.

I'v two little complaints though. The scrambled egg doesn't taste like egg. And charging for ketchup is seriously mean. However overall its a great amenity to have on campus.

Is it Compass who are doing the Catering? FFS I think they're following me!

And they don't serve burgers on Fridays in my work canteen!

It's good value if you're buying meals and the likes but it cost me €3.20 for an orange, plum, kiwi and tea today. If you consider that tea costs 85c then that's an average of 78c for a piece of fruit... which is, frankly, extortionate. Considering that a friend of mine got the guts of a fry breakfast for €2.50 it seems really unfair to have fruit so expensive.

It is compass as I am working for them and tried to catch a job there but my lecture times didn't suit them :(
In most places they do serve burgers on Fridays. I've been working in many units and it was like that so won't be surprised ;)
