whirlpool AMW 1000 washing machine buggered !

    hi all , ive just spent a day and night trawling through all the posts on here regarding washing machines , but alas no one has the prehiostoric dinosaur that i seem to have , its a whirlpool AMW 1000 and its about eight years old , worked fine every day until this week when i put on a wash and i went back an hour later and it was still on the first cycle , the dial hadnt moved at all !!! it will click and start to fill and the drum rotates slowly but thats as far as it goes , it doesnt seem to be able to get on to the next cycle , i cleaned the filter ( found two coins in it ) and checked everything was ok , there isnt any warning lights on the front of it , just an on-off switch and 1000/500 rpm switch and thats it , im at my whits end because the washing is going out the door at this stage ( i have three young kids !!! ) any help would be gratelly appreciated before i call out the " sharp intake of breath guys " .:(:(:(
