I have been searching and searching high and low for a diesel car under €4500 for the past 3 weeks and I'm finding it next to impossible to find a car which hasn't been messed around with in some form or another. The amount of car we have rang and viewed is making me wonder will I ever find a car???:(:(

Three weeks isn't that long to be looking, finding the right car at the right price can take time. Are you sure you're asking enough/the right questions on the phone?

Maybe you are trying to get into a type/age of car that will only be got in a rough state for your budget.

What car/age are you looking for?

ive had so many people say to me when i was selling my old cars, "jex its expensive isint it", then they go view the other cheaper cars, and they come back!

only recently i sold my 2002 320d SE in less than a week to the first fella that viewed it then went off after i didnt discount it enough. he offered, i said no and we went our ways. 6 days later he rang back and said, listen i know why yours is priced like that now, can i come and collect :D

OP, what exactly are you looking for? what make and model?
ie. theres no point saying ive looked at 10 cars with my 3.5k and no one was clean when the average selling price of clean versions of that car are selling for 5k!

Are you concentrating on private sales only or looking at dealers as well? If you're looking at dealers, are you avoiding main dealers or checking out both independent and main dealers?

Tell us also what sources you're looking at (donadeal/carzone/newspapers etc.)?

A diesel? Straight? under €4.5k? No.

Anyone that has a good one is keeping it, you'll just have to look very hard, any good ones get snapped up very quickly :)

Ive been looking for a car the past couple of months aswell, my conclusion is most people on donedeal are idiots and Irish people dont look after their cars. Ill prob have to go the the UK because they are such mongs.

I think anything within that budget is going to be a bit rough around the edges given your budget.

People are willing to pay way over the odds for a diesel car at the minute

Good diesels are hard to find in that price range but they are there, just recently I bought an Avensis in Meath for €4000, it is a 2004 and is spotless, bought it private but had spent about 4 weeks looking, if your in Louth there is a local free ads mag that I found useful.

It's hard in the north east area as people are selling northern cars as well and sometimes a car will seem reasonably priced in it's ad and then when you ring you realise you need to add vrt.

i was looking for a car for a month and found it frustrating, ok i had a bit more to spend but its all relative..

first thing.. write out a list of what you want, then screw it up and throw it away.. chances are you wont get exactly what your looking for, esp diesel, you can great cars on petrol for thousands less than i was spending spec'ed to the last but as soon as you ticked the diesel box, the choices were few and far between.. its prob worth noting that the significance of diesel cars only came about in the last few years before that petrol wasnt the evil fuel of choice so more cars were bought petrol afaik.. hence another reason why older are so hard to find.

good luck.. i feel for you!!

Why so desperate about diesel? Older diesels are not that nice to drive as newest ones, fixing them might be very expensive and price difference between diesel and petrol version of the same car would cover your fuel expenses anyway.
