Purchased a 08 Mondeo with 2.0 tdi .Seem to get an intermittent vibration on motorway when i take it up to 110 kmh. Much more noticable for the passenger than the driver. Vibration for 10 secs then goes away for 15 seconds then back again for 10 seconds , in and out like this all the time unless i slow to 90kmh. :(

Four wheels balance at the Ford Dealer but issue still there.

    Any ideas, anyone?

Are any of the wheels warped?

Get the wheel balance checked somewhere else, just because it was done at a main dealer doesn't mean it was done right.

If still the same, start swapping tyres around.

Does the vibration disappear over 110km/h?

Normally mis-balanced tyres would cause a vibration through the steering wheel. OP mentions that it is more noticable for the passenger than the driver which would be a bit unusual to me if it were wheel balancing.

I'd bring it to a proper tyre centre rather than a dealer and have them check the tyres for signs of a buldge or the rims for signs of a buckle. I'd also get the brake discs checked. Also as suggested get them to switch the front wheels to the back and see if the vibration is still there.

It might be a bearing. I had a similar problem with my Passat, the noise would start at the same speed and then go away again at 140KPH or over.

Would agree with this bazz, I would inspect the tyres carefully and see if they are aged of hardened if a bit old.

I had an oldish set of tyres on the front and had the wheels balanced a few times and just couldn't get rid of vibration at 100 km/h. Changed the tyres and hey presto vibration gone.

    Thanks for the responses.

I purchased this car from a Ford dealer (Appleyard) . They put 4 new (cheapish) tyres on the car but it was obvious straight away that they never balanced them  so i brought them to another ford dealer (shiels in limerick) who promised that they balanced them (there was an improvement). I went back to query the balancing but they wanted the car for another day but i was fed up at that stage. The steering does pull to the left a bit but i hear that's normal for a mondeo

Steering should not pull to any side unless for the camber of the road. What make are the tyres???

Alloys on? If so, check very carefully for warping. Modern alloys are soft as fook and warp easily. No matter how much balancing is done, still get vibing at 100kph-check/replace:)

    I have a 2008 mondeo 2.0tdci myself..
Something similar happened to me a few months ago.

Turned out to be a bulge on sidewall of the tyre.

The new tyres are R16 Sunew YS112 . No sign of any bulges. The alloys like the attached...

had the same problem after proper balancing problems gone... lots of tyreservices does very poor job ..one lad in one of these service just told me "5-10grams up or down..it doesnt matter!!" ..lazy bastard. So i took my car to one Slovakian guy in Waterford.. balancing done again there(3 wheels with 10-15grams difference between wheel sides)..checked 3 times every wheel after!! ..since then no problems at all!
