My wife's car (Renault Clio) has recently starting to drop revs in the middle of driving, you can hear the engine drop off and the rev-gauge indicates the same.
has anybody had this experience in the past.
    Advise appreciated

This sounds like a fault that i have come across. Does the engine warning light and/or the glow plug light come on?

Actually no, there are no warning indicators lighting up. Its been happening for about two weeks.
I have it booked in next week but was just wondering if it was a small or big problem i was looking at having fixed.

The fault that I came across in a similar 03 began like yours, developed into cutting out/difficult to start with engine light/glow plug light coming on and fault codes. Anyway, the fault was caused by a build-up of carbon on the throttle body. Removed it, cleaned off the carbon, cleared the codes, job done!

Just wondering if you have any update on the problem?

if there is no drop in speed (ie loss of power) I would wonder whether its an electric fan cutting out once there is sufficent airflow from the speed to cool the engine without it. Or could it be the aircon cutting out?

    Clutch may be slipping.

Wouldn't be a slipping clutch. Slipping clutch causes revs to spike when it slips.

I had a flat spot like the op describes on my bike a while back. New set of plugs, new airfilter and it was all fine again.

Could be lots of things really.
