is itunes the only option for renting a movie online and being able to watch instantly (or almost instanly depending on connection)?

Can we get lovefilm in Ireland? Are there any other options? Surely in this digital age we must have these services somewhere? or are we still lagging way behind the USA and UK?

iTunes and Xbox Live Zune tend to have a limited selection of rentals. Very hit and miss. Mubi is there for streaming world and indie cinema. Has a subscription service too. Again, limited in Ireland compared to elsewhere.

Alas, we have no Netflix or Lovefilm competitor worth noting :(

Yeah, iTunes and Zune are the only major ones that I'm aware of. But I'm sure Netflix will arrive here eventually.

There is still no iTunes tv shows. And the last I heard, Apple weren't in a big rush because they didn't feel Ireland had the broadband infrastructure for it.

Blinkbox is another decent service. Keep an eye on their Facebook page as they often give out discount codes.

Acetrax is found on Samsung Smart TVs, but is accessible through your computer too and open to Ireland.

But I think the best solution is setting up an US iTunes account. It has a brilliant range of Movies and TV shows, in both SD and HD.

Edit: Volta.ie has a few Indie titles too.

Had a look at MUBI on my PS3, the picture quality is quite good (almost DVD quality but more compression artifacts on my 20mb connection) but at 3.59 per movie it doesn't have enough choice of good indies or arthouse just a lot of obscure or old arthouse flicks, no Downfall, Lives of Others, A Prophet, Mesrine, Trainspotting or pretty much anything else you have heard of for example, my local Laser has 10 times the choice for 3.50 a movie so I'll be sticking with them for the time being. Will take a few years for enough films to be licensed for streaming in Ireland that match a good DVD rental shop's stock I'd say.

Edit: Had a quick look at Volta, better choice than MUBI but still at 3.99 not enough incentive for me to give up dvd rentals yet, maybe it would appeal to people who live miles away from a decent rental shop though..

Problem with Mubi is a common one: rights issues. I logged in when I was over in New Zealand last year and I was met with a vast range of films - stuff like Glengarry Glen Ross (just one that springs to mind). Unfortunately, when it comes to movies on the internet it appears that borders restrict everyone but the illegal downloaders.

But I'd still recommend their subscription service, which is around 12.99 a month? Get it once or twice, and work through as many of the films as you can. There is some excellent, out there stuff - especially some hard-to-find Asian stuff, and I'm always a sucker for stuff like that. Plus tonnes of classic silents and a limited range of fascinating world cinema stuff (Lars von Trier has a large amount of films up there). And you can take in loads of shorts too while you have the sub.
