Hi all, i'm thinking of buying this car in the link below.

Any advice would be very welcome.
I need a big family car as i have 3 kids.
I'd also be doing approximately 20,000 miles per year so i need a diesel.

    Thanks
    smallman:)

    Hi,

that era Mazda 6 Diesel has a terrible reputation for blowing the engine big time at around 80,000 miles.

Probably better to pick almost any other diesel car I am afraid.

Run away fast. Any diesel other then that one. They tend to blow up.

    What's your budget?

Similar size and preferably diesel please.
    All help greatfully appreciated:)

They are very prone to big end failure but, having had reason to research this recently, the problem seems to be a design flaw which cause excess build up of deposits on the oil pick up, eventually leading to oil starvation.

The solution to keeping one of these in good health seems to be to remove the sump and check/clean the oil pick up at least at every second service.

The problem with buying a second hand one though is that its doubtfull if anyone will have done this previously so it would be impossible to gauge what, if any, wear will already be there.

Its a shame as IMO the mazda 6 is an excellent car otherwise.

Sorry about the Ad for the car.
It was more to show the mileage on the car and the dealer.
The dealer has a good reputation i think.
Anyway i don't think i'll be buying it now

Thankyou for that. I really just want something low maintenence and that if i service it regularly will run well.
I know nothing is guaranteed. I'm not very mechanically minded.

    Ford Mondeo
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Mondeo/Zetec-Di/201133204006364/advert?channel=CARS

Looks like a UK import so check the power output as the UK got all diesel engine variants on all model (Ireland only got 115 & 130 on the Zetec).

That Ford engine is a lot more reliable than the Mazda lump, servicing on Fords is pretty cheap, and they are very nice to drive (IMHO).

    What about this car?
I don't drive a car hard so power isn't the most important thing for me.
I live in the countryside so not too much motorway driving.
Maybe drive once a fortnight on the motorway.

The 90ps version of the engine is a bit sluggish, but would be adequate. The 115ps is much nicer to drive, if you can find one.

Biggest issue the Mondeo has is the clutch is expensive to replace - circa €1,200 I think, if it goes.

I had a 2001 model for about 60,000 miles a few years ago. Only issue I ever had was the gearbox mounting broke, but that was partly my fault ("spirited "take off in the wet). Just standard tyres and servicing apart from that.

    Oh yes.
Once the auto box gets a fluid change at 90/100k miles ish, the breather filter is changed every 2nd or 3rd service and the plenum drains are checked to ensure the ECU area won't flood there isn't much to worry about.

The engine is a BMW unit that would be very reliable and proven in the Rover75 application, mated to a Mitsubishi turbo unit it doesn't encounter the turbo issues the BMW 3 series diesel had.

Nice big, comfy cars, ideal for someone doing 20k miles/annum.

As you can see they are less expensive than a fresh Mondeo and in my view are a better car (I had a Mondeo diesel and currently have a petrol ZT which is very similar to a 75)

If you decide to have a look I can send you a few things to check on them.

Just looking at the car you posted i'd prefer a Hatchback.

    Thank you again

They all look on the pricey side.
At your budget I'd be looking on donedeal.
I'd much prefer to buy from a dealer than private though
I'd be happy to pay a tiny bit extra for the peace of mind

    That's just me

Sure and I understand that, if you are actually getting a warranty.
And I'm not talking about the 6 months engine and gearbox that gets slapped on most used cars...

I'd have no problems going private in this price range, inspect yourself and if your happy pay a mechanic to do a proper inspection.
If your wise you would do this even when buying used from a dealer.

The OP doesn't seem to know much about cars like myself so may prefer to buy from a dealer.

But as you rightly state if the OP would be able to get the help of a good mechanic a private sale might be more value for money:)

    Good luck OP

The Avensis hasn't been mentioned by anyone.
My old 98 diesel version is still going strong at nearly 250,000 miles but I'm thinking ahead to when it does need to be replaced.
I would be thinking of a similar budget to the OP and would probably look at another one unless I can be convinced otherwise.
Depends what you are looking for I suppose - if it is reliability and minimal repair/servicing costs then I would say Toyota are difficult to beat.

Haven't Toyota had an awful lot of problems recently?
Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong on that.

I'd imagine every car has some problems.

As far as i know Toyota are one of the least problematic cars

They are having a laugh asking that sort of money for a 05 diesel Mondeo. This one seems better value:

Hi people. I still haven't purchased but i'm eager to get something sorted soon.
I've come across another car i'd like peoples opinions on

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2495262

    http://www.adverts.ie/car/407/407/peugeot-407-for-sale-hdi-5250/838251

Both links are for the same car just on different sites.
    What do people think?

Decent cars, my Uncle has the same (I believe) engine in a Citroen C5, the mileage isn't out of the way for a 6 year old diesel either.
I'd like a bigger engine though for the sake of a few hundred in motor tax.

The price seems reasonable to me.
It's a big family car which is what i need.
I don't need loads of power as i don't drive too often on motorways.
    Thanks for you input again:)

Curiosity got the better of me :pac:

    ..............

In fairness the seller seems open about being a dealer of sorts, I've bought cars off similar folk and had no bother at all.

" i'd take anything but wouldnt be offering mad prices as my cars are priced to sell, not like dealers who price up cars knowing that people will be trading in. this car is spotless and well maintained one owner and fully serviced, have book here all stamped"

Member on here too if they have adds on adverts, oops :o

I didn't follow up my interest in the Peugeot.

    I've spotted the following car.

I'm wondering has anyone experience of these cars?
I'm desperate not to make a mistake as 7 or 8k is a lot of money to me(as it is to other people)

I've heard they can have problems with the electrics(especially the windows) but the engine is sluggish but pretty reliable.

    I'm no expert though

7.5k for a near 7 year old Renault with 100k km and no new NCT.

Seller must be having a laugh, just a joke price really.

Has anyone mentioned a Honda Accord yet?

Dont know a lot about them but I was in one lately and was very impressed. It was a 05 executive model, had a leather interior etc. Very comfortable car and looks very well too.

2.2 Diesel could be a little high on tax though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,575 ✭✭✭166man

Honda Accord and Rover 75 slowly creeping up on the Skoda Octavia as ''most mentioned car'' on here...:D

But an Accord would be another option except the tax which I think is around 800 quid..

The car actually was coming with a fresh new NCT.
The dealer was putting it throught he NCT. (I think dealers are obliged to)
He was also offering 1 years warranty with the car and 1000 euro off for a straight deal

Still if the electrics cause big problems as i've heard about these i think i'll hold off on it.
It's a nice looking 7 seater with an economical albeit slow engine.
Also i would have thought that 100k kms on a 7 year old car was very good.
