Hi all. I'm living in larkfield and I know noone. I thought the common rooms would have been a great way to meet people but they all seem to be empty or locked? After a week at college i have not met one person here :(SO WHY ARE THEY NOT OPEN?

Last year they got a bit trashed so they were locked, or so I heard.

First years have had a history of abusing them, mess everywhere, smashing ceiling tiles or breaking other things. Everytime something happens they get locked.
You'll have much more chance to meet people next week, you'll be in class and look out for anything societies have going. You got to take a leap too and say hello to people around and introduce yourself.

Why not just try talking to other people in other places?

Is the common room not quite intimidating going in on your own?

I found the bar is the best place to meet people (probably a bit Irish but anyway), Tuesday nights were always great during the year. There's always lots of events on about the place, the rave in Larkfield tonight with the dj should be good for getting to know the locals. Get to know your room mate and meet their friends too.

so you want them open but don't want to go in if they were
they were always crap when they were open anyway and they get closed every year due to vandalism etc

like other people said, you'll probably start meeting people next week in class etc

maybe invite a mate up to stay with you and go to the dcu bar with them and start chatting to people, you'll soon find someone that is doing the same course as you and get talking to them

I think clubs and socs day is next week, join a bunch and go to whatever it is they have on. When they start having events there will be a big emphasis on getting to know people, you're also bound to meet a few people who live on campus through these.

Clubs and socs will be advertising for new members next Tuesday and Wednesday, already been talking to members of a soc I want to join, and getting on pretty well with them :)
