UPC HD DVR+ remote - Can it control TV volume?

I have a UPC HD DVR Digital + box (Cisco / Scientific Atlanta) and something is really driving me crazy :

I want to be able to adjust the volume on my TV using the UPC remote, in the same way that the Sky+ remote does this i.e. when I hit volume +/- the volume of the TV should go up and down.

What's happening on the UPC remote is that it's adjusting the volume feeding the TV via the HDMI cable, rather than the TV's volume. This is not very accurate.

Then if I hit "TV" on the remote to switch over to controlling the television, it also switches the HDMI feed to the default in-built tuner in the TV. So, I can only change the volume by sticking my hand over the remote control's output window to avoid that signal being sent.

Is there any way of getting around this?

I have a Sony TV btw.

You can train your UPC remote to control your TV. Download the manual for your set top box from UPC from here:
    http://www.upc.ie/customer_support/manuals/

Read the section on setting up the Remote Control and all will be explained.

That seems to just link me to a manual for the older DVD regardless of which model I click on.

I've programmed the remote with the code for Sony and it is controlling the TV. The problem is that when I press "TV" it switches the TV's feed from AV4, which is the HDMI port for the UPC box, to general TV tuner mode.

So, if I press "TV" to adjust the TV's volume, the screen goes blank as it goes into analogue TV mode (with nothing connected)

The only solution I can come up with is to cover the top of the remote with my hand when I press "TV" so that the TV misses the command the remote is sending out to switch AV feeds!

It's not exactly straight forward :D

Have the same issue, thats quality. Apparently this is supposed to support the scenario you described: http://support.upc.ie/app/answers/detail/a_id/342/~/volume-settings-using-digital%2B-remote

    doesn't work for me though.

I'm using it on a Viera, a Philips LCD, and a Toshiba LCD. You don't have to switch to TV on the remote to control the volume (not with me anyway).

It's not too difficult. Setup the remote to control your tv by entering the 3 digit code (press red and ok until the UPC button flashes twice and enter the code from the back of the UPC book or the website)
Once you can control the tv press UPC button
Press the red and ok button till it flashes twice
Enter 993 and press the volume up button
The UPC button will flash 4 times to show its worked
This should then allow you to control the tv volume while in UPC mode

I have tried that and it all follows your steps. even the "flash 4 times", however it simply will still change the upc volume in upc mode. Changing volume in tv mode however changes the tv volume.

The UPC remote is a rebadged version of a Universal Remote control.

To get the UPC remote to control TV volume only, you need to:
    1. Press and hold <OK>&<Red Button> until the LED blinks twice.
    2. Enter 9-9-3 (LED of currently controlled device blinks twice) then <TV> (TV LED blinks twice).
    3. Volume buttons on UPC remote now control TV volume only.

This remote control does a fair bit more than UPC would have you believe - see original Universal Remote manual, substituting <OK>&<Red Button> for <SET>.

Also noticed the auld pair have some saor-view box in their house and the remote looks identical to the one UPC give with these boxes so it can probably do similar.

The instructions on UPC's support page look slightly different, so I will give your ones ago tonight as theirs don;t work:
    http://support.upc.ie/app/answers/detail/a_id/342/~/volume-settings-using-digital%2B-remote
    - Press the UPC button. The button will illuminate once.
    - Press RED and OK together until the UPC button flashes twice
    - Enter code: 993 (after the last digit the UPC button flashes twice again) Here they don't specify to press 'TV'
    - Press the volume up button (the UPC button flashes four times)Not needed!
