Printer recommendation for excessive printing of sheets?

Hey, I'm in college at the moment, and most lecturers insist we print their notes from Moodle.

The only problem is, their notes are usually 20/30 pages in length and while it mightn't seem like a lot, it adds up to a lot when you've to print 100 or so each week!

In college it costs between 8c and 10c to print 1 sheet, so I was wondering would I be better off buying a laser/normal printer and doing it myself or just paying for it in college?

    Thanks!

Are they in PDF/PowerPoint/Word format etc? If you click into file print you have the options in those programs to print as "Handouts" or multiple pages per sheet, such as six pages per sheet, thats what I did in college, I used a normal inkjet printer. Be aware you may need to change the orientation to landscape for the output to be read more easily

    James,

A quick Google makes it quite obvious you own or work at the company in question, shilling isn't welcome here. To OP pick up a cheap ink jet and print like I suggested, Lasers are only for high volume bulk printing and much more expensive, you can pick inkjet cartridges up online cheap enough from the likes of JustMedia or Inkjet. Canon and epson ink jet printers are usually cheapest for compatibles but make sure to shop around!

Nick! I don't work in this but get allot of help from them on these printing issues

It appears their Customer Support Manager has the same name: <snip> funny enough. Also how would a US company be cheap for OP to use to get stuff printed, postage of bulk documents wouldn't be cheap from the States to Ireland I would have thought?...

Have to reccommend a HP Officejet 6500a, it's an Inkjet printer/scanner/fax; the black ink 920XL costs about €30 and prints 1200 pages... Colour ink about 750 pages @ €12.

Got one for my nephew for his house in their last year of degree, saw them thru no probs..

Another option: KODAK ESP-C315 Wireless All-in-One Inkjet Printer
€89.99 in PC World. Excellent printer and cheap ink replacement.

Any idea how many prints per cartridge?

My old Epson printer barely lasts 100.. :(

You will probably get nowhere near 1200 pages out of a cartridge, its like laptop batterys, there are many different factors to consider that manufacturers will leave out, the 920XL cartridge does come with 54ML of ink however, and the standard being around 15ML-19ML~ it will last a while, not sure if HPs waste as much ink to "charge" as other manufacturers do though, the Kodaks are apparently expensive to run, cheaper ink cartridges but don't last that long, so I remember being told not sure if it is still the case!

What if I were to pick up a laser printer on special offer for €54? It prints 700 with just the sample ink in it..

How much is a replacement toner, and 700 pages with a trial toner is probably as I said above a generous estimation as to what you'll really get out of it, what laser printer is it?

Replacements are 70! I'm not sure of the one, my dad was telling me about it and just gave me the details! AFAIK it's a Samsung though!

Exactly tbh your probably better off with an inkjet, that HP Printer linked above will probably suit. The reason is you have the choice of colour and black and white. I printed my entire thesis (125 pages approx) three times on my Epson ink jet printer onto high grade 100grm paper. It cost me about 8 quid for a ream of it. I can pick up spare inks for my Epson at €2 online so I saved an absolute fortune.
A m8 who got 3 thesis printed and bound (same kind of pages ammount roughly) was charged €80ish including printing and binding, I was just charged €18 for getting the 3 I had printed bound! Good idea to think for future use an ink jet may be more appropriate :)
Also check out my first post, you can print slideshows and documents into handout format, meaning multiple pages on a A4, thats what I did, I printed all my notes on my Epson this way :)

At the risk of looking like a huge geek... ISO have defined a standard printed page (roughly 5% page coverage) and the manufacturers base their claims as to how many pages their cartridges will print on the ISO standard page.
AS I said earlier I know ppl who've used the HP and they were very happy with how economical it was.
There is also an 8500 version (more expensive) that uses a 940XL cartridge for slightly more € but prints 2000+ pages!

Thanks for the link, Nick. There certainly is a massive price difference with any office supplier there. How do you find them regarding "mileage" compared with the genuine Epson ink? Unfortunately, they do'nt appear to sell the HP 363 cartridges as I'm also in the market for them due to price. Thanks again Sean

Ink lasts long enough, not had originals since I baught this printer so can't honestly say! Sometimes they become "unrecognized" so you change them at this point if there low, they work fine, I also use it to print on DVDs, attached a photo here so you can ascertain the quality on a Xbox 360 backup game printed with the compatibles,
Printing documents the inks also manage fine

Printers waste a large prition of ink while charging, thats when the printer makes those weird noises before printing. At printing using the economical print setting, fully going you may get near that ammount, but you'll find its prob way less than estimated, also I did say above that printer would satisfy OPs needs ;)

Laser is the way to go if Black and White is ok and you are doing hundreds of pages (though you can pickup cheap colour lasers too secondhand)

toners on ebay are fairly cheap , spend a bit more to get originals

can't remember if it's OKI but some of the lasers just have toner for about 10-15 euro instead of toner + photocunductor for 150 like HP

check with friends and relatives in case any can pay to print at work
if they have a decent contract then mono should be 1c per side A4 and 1c for the paper (double that for A3)

defo print slides as 2 (or even 4 per page if you can do something about margins) to economise

I'd recommend any of the machines that use 4-5seperate inks(canon or Epson)
Check out the price of the inks on www.justmedia.ie before buying the printer.
my canon ip5400 costs €2 per ink, not sure how many pages I get but I print a good few pages a day and usually but about 3 to 4 complete sets of inks/year
