    Hey all,

I quite want to start wearing red lipstick, but I've NO idea how to go about it! I will go and chat to someone in MAC or something, but I'm on a serious budget so I'll have to buy a high-street brand. Basically, I'm very pale but also have pink-toned skin. When I'm hot/drunk/embarrassed, I go quite red. I have blonde hair and really big eyes, so I usually emphasise my eyes with a lot of eyeliner. I'm afraid of red lipstick because of my pink-toned skin - I don't want to clash with myself! Does anyone have any advice on what shades to look for, and how to do the rest of my make-up to match?

First rule that comes to mind with red lipstick is to go for a 'blue based red' if you are pale with a rosy undertone. Steer well clear of orange reds at all costs. Also if you find red too scary as such, tone down the application for a subtle approach. Apply lightly without using a brush, simply dab a little on with your finger tip. Works for me... :)

hey faith, so i would definately go with nesbitt there with the blue based lipstick. i am the same colouring as you by the sounds of it and thats what i wear. There are a couple of good high street ones. just go into boots in town and there'll be loads of options- i believe revlon do a nice matte one, no.17, rimmel with kate moss... there is honestly a load of brands now that have nice red lipsticks. As for the rest of your make up i would go kinda 60s look with it... like dita von teese or the like. If you want to have a make up look tried on you for free... check out my last couple of entries in the general chit chat thread in cork city. :D:D

This video explains cool and warm undertones really well and will help you pick a good red lipstick! (ignore the Lancome pimping in the video)

Faith, I'm the same skintone/undertone as you and MAC recommended Russian Red to me and I love it. It's extremely pigmented and in-your-face but, it is so flattering!

Another, cheaper, alternative would be Revlon Fire and Ice or Gosh Soft n' Shine in Kiss which is almost an exact dupe for Russian Red!

How do you know if a red lipstick is 'blue based red'?

Generally by looking at it. If you put a few together you will be able to tell which ones are blue/pink/orange based.

Blue based reds tend to be cool, think fire engine red! After a while you'll just be able to see which undertones are in the lipstick.

Alternatively, just ask at a counter for a bright/dark blue-toned red!

I'm very pale and have strawberry blonde/ginger hair, and love my red lippie! I use Mac Russian Red or Rimmel Alarm. Find that the Mac has way better lasting power. If I do red lips, I'll do a very neutral eye colour and a fine liner, very subtle.

I found this puzzling too! Never heard of it :)

I use Max Factor lipfinity red. It must be 120 (hot) from looking at their website. I also have blonde hair, am pale and my cheeks go rosy pink when I'm really warm on a night out (or drinking wine ;)).

I use different eye make-up when I've got the "hot" lips - more heavy mascara and eye-liner, but no eye-shadow. Anyway I've got compliments before on the lip colour so it mustn't look that shocking!

I will have to try the Mac Russian Red, although I do prefer a lipstick that stays in place one you put it on once!
