Have you tried doing the manual config on the PS3?
Entering the SSID, password manually and setting a fixed IP address?
I think you will need the DNS and gateway first - so before beginning on your laptop open the Command window (start > Run > cmd)
    Then enter: ipconfig /all
Take a note of the default gateway and your 2 DNS servers - then go to your PS3 and enter the information manually.

What brand of router are you using? I'm using a ZyXEL router and have the same problem, PS3 cannot detect access point and putting in the information manually results in errors. There was another thread here a while ago with quite a few people having this problem. I've given up trying to get it to work at least until I get a new router.

As an FYI - you may have to open ports on your router and enable or change the uPNP settings.
There are multiple sites with information on how to do this for various types of router.

Unfortunately none work for me at the moment - but someday I will give it a lash again - tired of constantly shuffling my USB key around.

what a coincidence, that is the very same router i got in the mail yesterday. im back using the old router and they told me they have had similar problems and will be contacting the makers of this router and getting a fix of some sort.
